Fans may find basketball standings a mite perplexing By Trevor Partes Staff Reporter A glance at the Big Eight basket ball standings after the first week may leave some people, scratching their heads. Colorado, Kansas State and Mis souri are leading the conference. All three were picked in the pre season to finish in the lower half of the conference. The teams picked to finish in the upper division of the conference — Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Iowa State — are tied for last. Oklahoma and Kansas have yet to play Big Eight games. Iowa State coach Tim Floyd said during the Big Eight coaches’ weekly teleconference that Colorado dealt his 11-2 Cyclone team a surprise in his first conference game. The Buffaloes defeated the Cy clones 71-57 in Boulder, Colo. “That scares me as a newcomer,” Floyd said. “If that is supposed to be the eighth-place team in the confer ence, then this is a heck of a league.” Floyd said this was no time for his team to panic, even though they didn’t fare well against Colorado. “All 14 games on the schedule are important,” Floyd said. “The pres sure comes at home, because that is where you have to win.” Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton said his team had struggled this year, but some upsets usually occur at the start of conference play. “The intensity level rises,” Sutton said. “There is not one powerhouse in college basketball.” The Cowboys are 9-5 after losing to Kansas State Saturday night. The Wildcats have jumped out to a 10-3 record. Kansas State coach Tom Asbury said it was important for his team to start conference play with a win. “I had at least 1,(K)0 people tell me we were not going to win a Big Eight game at all,” Asbury said. One of the traditional powers in the Big Eight, Missouri, has been a surprise this year. The Tigers lost nine players from last year’s team that went 28-4 and 14-0 in the Big Eight. Last year’s Big Eight Freshman of the Year, Kelly Thames, tore his an terior cruciate ligament before the season and will not return for Mis souri. Missouri started the Big Eight sea son beating Nebraska 77-64 Saturday in Lincoln, and was rewarded by be ing ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press poll. With Thames out, Tiger coach Norm Stewart said he was happy with the way his team had started out at 10 1. “I always was taughtyou shouldn’t be surprised,” Stewart said. “Any body who wouldn’t be pleased has a terrible outlook on life.” Overall Missouri Colorado Oklahoma Big Eight Standings Wednesday, January 11 Colorado at Missouri-Kansas City, 7:30 p.m. St. Louis at Iowa State, 7 p.m. Oklahoma State at Oral Roberts, Thursday, January 12 Kansas State at Nebraska, 6:30 Notre Dame at Missouri, 7 p.m. Saturday, January 14 Colorado at Oklahoma, 12:40 p.m. Kansas at Iowa State, 2:50 p.m. Kansas State at Missouri, 7 p.m. Oklahoma State at Michigan State, Used fiction & non-fiction. The Golden Gophers are ranked tenth in the country, and the Huskers are ranked eighth. Husker coach Tim Neumann said the dual with Minnesota shovridtrffer his team a tough test. “They are a great team, and I’m sure the dual will come down to the heavyweight match,” he said. “On paper there are six matches that are toss-ups, and the other four are split two and two, so I’m sure it will go down to the wire.” And if it goes down to the wire, the dual will come down to the heavy weight match between Nebraska’s Tolly Thompson and Minnesota’s Billy Pierce. The Huskers have three wrestlers who are ranked. Steve Baer is fourth at 126, Temoer Terry is fourth at 150 and Thompson is fourth at heavy weight. Thompson is ranked fourth in th^ nation; Pierce is ranked fifth. Th ompson defeated Pierce earlier this season at the Omaha Open, and he defeated him at the NCAA Champi onships last season. Nebraska Continued from Page 7 point range. Mikki Moore made all five of his field goal attempts and had 11 points in the win, and Melvin Brooks had 11 points and seven rebounds. Juaquin Hawkins and Eric Brown led the Long Beach scoring with 12 Women Continued from Page 7 play, and they hope to build on that success by making a few adjustments. “We’re just doing a couple of little things wrong that are causing us prob lems,” Beck said. “Generally we played OK. We need some outstand ing ^ performances from other play ers. Beck said that she was pleased with the performance of junior guard points each, and Joe McNaull added 11. Terrance O’Kelley had 10 points and nine rebounds. The Comhuskers shot 60 percent from the floor for the game, and the 49ers shot 35.9 percent. “It looked like Long Beach just ran out of gas,” Nee said in the radio interview. “It was an ugly-ass win.” Kate Galligan. Galligan led all play ers with 20 points and IT rebounds off the bench in the Huskers’ loss to Kansas. Galligan said she believed that she needed to take a leadership role to help the Huskers be successful. “I*1ve been around for three years,” Galligan said, “so I kind of know what it takes to win these games.” Galligan, who has been used as both a starter and off the bench, just wants to be in the game at the end to help the Huskers win.
