Who Could Ask For More! 12th & O St • 476-8561 Gateway Mall • 467-2509 ROIC joins project promoting cooperation By Stacie Ranrwr Staff Reporter UNL is taking part in a project to promote cooperation among the U.S. armed forces. The University of Nebraska Lincoln’s ROTC units are joining four other U.S. universities to pilot the Joint ROTC Test Program, said Capt. Frank Tryon, commanding of ficer of Naval ROTC at UNL. The other universities are Oregon Slate, Penn State, Iowa State and Auburn. In a time of cutbacks in the armed forces, the program seeks to create efficiency among the military branches through interaction and in tegrated training, Tryon said. “We’re looking for more and bet ter things to do together,” he said. The ROTC branches won’t change their identities, Tryon said, but they will look for ways to work together. The Navy Pistol, Rifle and Drill Team, a team formerly reserved for students in the naval program, now will be called the UNL ROTC Pistol, Rifle and Drill Team. It will open its membership to all ROTC members. “In the same vein,” Tryon said, “the Army has opened up its military Olympics to intercollegiate options.” Tryon said cooperation between the Army, Navy and Air Force al ready was strong at UNL. “We have a very easy, open rela tionship,” he said. “We all recognize that war is fast, and the military has to be able to react fast.” Other activities in the program include a monthly luncheon for jun iors and seniors, a cadet cadre steer ing group, the chancellor’s review and a military ball. The university also houses all three branches in one building, he said. Traditionally, ROTC branches have studied and trained indepen dently. That division has contributed to parochialism in the military, Tryon said. Tryon said advanced technology and changes in war required more cooperation among the branches. He said the military must set a common goal and not have separate ones for each branch. “I think this is a terrific program,” Tryon said. “The students that are in this are quality, motivated students.” Jim Boerner, a junior agricultural engineering major, said military op erations in Haiti were an example of the need for increased cooperation among branches. “More can be accomplished, as well as cutting costs (with greater cooperation),” he said. Tryon said support from the uni versity, something not all ROTC pro grams had, was the main reason UNL ROTC was chosen. UNL also was chosen because it supported the test program and al ready had goals, he said. Boerner said competition among branches was minimal at UNL.
