    Erickson awaits Jan. 1 matchup
By Tr»vor Park*
Staff Reporter
All Miami football coach Dennis
Erickson wants is a chance.
A chance to play Nebraska, and a
chance to become the No. 1 team in
the country after the 10-1 Hurricanes
play host to the 12-0 Comhuskers at
the Federal Express Orange Bowl in
Miami on Jan. 1.
“It’s the premier matchup in the
bowl games this year,” Erickson said.
“The biggest thing about this game
is we get an opportunity to play one
of the great football teams in the
countfy.”
That opportunity against the No.
1 Huskers opens up another possibil
ity for Miami.
If No. 2 Penn State loses to Or
egon Jan. 2 in the Rose Bowl, and if
the Hurricanes beat the Huskers, Mi
ami will have the chance to lobby for
a national championship.
The Hurricanes almost lost a shot
at the title by losing to Washington
38-20 in the Orange Bowl stadium
earlier this year.
“We knew after that game we
couldn’t lose any more if we wanted
any opportunity to compete for the
national championship,” Erickson
said.
But a win over Florida State may
have changed things.
“Obviously the turning point was
when we beat Florida State.”
Erickson said. “That gave us a great
deal of confidence going into the
other games. From that game on, we
have pretty much dominated most of
our games.”
Now when the Hurricanes take on
the Huskers, that domination will
most likely end.
Erickson said Nebraska was very
deserving of its ranking, and any 12
0 team is very good.
“You don't become No. 1 in the
country without being awfully good
and playing the schedule they’ve
played and winning their games as
convincingly as they have,” he said.
With two healthy quarterbacks in
Tommie Frazier and Brook Berringer,
“It 's the premier
matchup in the bowl
games this year.”
DENNIS ERICKSON
Miami football coach
Nebraska is good no matter who will
be under center New Year’s night,
Erickson said.
“When Tommie Frazier went
down, there were people that thought
they wouldn’t be as good offensively,”
Erickson said. “I’m not sure that
they’re not as good now, and they
may be better.”
And the Huskcr defense is good
as well, Erickson said.
“Their biggest area of improve
ment since we played them last is
their defense,” Erickson said. “Their
team speed on defense is much bet
ter than it has been in the past.”
Lions bite off NU winning streak
By Trevor Parks
Staff Reporter
The Penn State volleyball team left
the NU Coliseum with a feeling that
no team has had against Nebraska the
past two years.
The Nittany Lions became the first
team since New Mexico on Sept. 4,
1992, to defeat the Cornhusjcers at
home.
The No. 5 Nittany Lions, 31-3.
won a four-game, 12-15, 15-11, 15
9, 15-8 match over Nebraska Satur
day at the NU Coliseum.
Penn State coach Russ Rose said
this was a great victory for his team
on the way to its NCAA semifinal
match against UCLA Thursday.
“I’m not necessarily surprised or
shocked by anything that happened
out there,” Rose said. “I thought we
did what we needed to do.”
What the Nittany Lions did was
outplay the 31-1 Cornhuskers and
keep the NU Coliseum crowd in con
trol.
“It’s a great win for us to be able
to come to Nebraska and play the top
ranked team in front of a very sup
portive volleyball crowd,” Rose said.
Rose said his team had a good
chance to win the first game, but his
team was playing tentatively because
of the crowd.
“I thought we had some players
that played very tight in the first
game,” Rose said. “It might have
been because it's such a difficult arena
once the crowd gets as loud as it can
get at spontaneous times.”
Rose, a former assistant at Ne
braska in 1978-79, said the schedule
his team played this year helped the
Nittany Lions prepare for a team like
Nebraska.
“We’ve played in tough arenas,
and I thought our players did a good
job of maintaining their energy and
focus so that they were able to place
themselves in a position to win.”
After Nebraska won the first
game, Penn State didn’t lose any con
fidence, and the Nittany Lions put
themselves in a position to win the
match.
Penn State setter Salima Davidson
said with four seniors on the team,
Penn State wasn’t rattled by the first
game loss.
“That’s one good thing about our
team is that we rarely lose confidence
irwourselvcs,” Davidson said.
Davidson said Penn State noticed
that the Huskers struggled with Penn
Stale’s defense.
“You can always tell when a team
starts to get frustrated,” Davidson
said. “Our left side couldn’t have
played better defense thait they did
tonight, and I think that’s very frus
trating for any team.”
