ahead of music that it perhaps was,”
Jones said.
Jones said he enjoyed the opportu
nity to work on another rock record.
“I enjoy playing rock ‘n’ roll and
being very loud and playing rhythmi
cally, and that’s the riff style I do
indefinitely. It’s just how I play rock
‘n’ roll.”
Jones wanted to make it clear that
Galas was the force behind “The
Sporting Life.”
“The essence of ‘The Sporting
Life’ is the lyrics — the personal
angle of Diamanda — with me just
leaping around in the background
going ‘Go on! Go on!’ and cheering
from behind.”
“The Sporting Life” again marks a
new era in Jones’ life, but he said new
accomplishments reflected a natural
progression rather than a dramatic
change from his Zeppelin days.
“The people that got what we were
doing shouldn’t be surprised in the
slightest,” he said. “It’s not more of
the same, though. I haven’t changed
much since I did what I did then. I’m
easy with both things, and I’m happy
with what I did.”
Jones keeps his past accomplish
ments and work in the past and doesn ’I
plan on repeating them. Jones was
not a part of the Page and Plant re
union tour and consequent album “No
Quarter.”
Led Zeppelin is the past, and the
future holds new projects for Jones.
He moves on, but he doesn’t forget.
“There were many Led Zeppelin
shows where we were really accepted.
I do remember those with warm
memories and pride,” Jones said. “I
have good memories of most of my
projects.”
His work with GalAs will con
tinue, but not in the sense that they
have formed a band. Jones needs
“someone else to play with now.”-He
might work with an Internet "nerd”
friend, Michael Penn.
Jones said the unvarying state of
music in England might also change
with the dawning of the Internet in
formation age.
“There’s still a great do-it-your
self thing here. The period of punk is
almost on us again with kids making
records in the bedroom and renting
bands,” he said.
While rock music remains “pretty
boring,” Indian, techno-dance rave

and black British music are making
their way onto England’s music scene,
he said.
“These artists are really getting
active and buying computers and turn
ing out fantastic stuff. They’re revi
talizing the ’80s,” he said. “It feels
like ’76 all over again.”
Music still confronts society’s
problems, he said, but by 2000 the
means of getting these messages to
people who want to listen to them
will be different.
“People that make minority music
may find that they no longer have to
convince a record company to give
them a deal,” he said. “They may just
be able to put stuff on the network
and have other people take it off.”
With the helpofthe Internet, Jones
said he hoped more people could be
exposed to new, experimental musi
cal forms.
“Internet is growing. It has a lot of
potential. It’s very young yet, and it’s
good to be getting to learn about
technology from the start,” he said.
“It’s communication. Anything to
do with communication is good, be
cause it breaks down barriers.”

The singer said she was disgusted
by people who blamed their lives on
their parents.
“Any eccentricity of my personal
ity I’m ready to take lull credit for,”
she said.
That’s quite a responsibility for
someone as shocking as Gal&s. Her
eccentricity extends beyond her mu
sic into her sexual life and her out
look on relationships.
“Sex is power. It also has a lot to
do with games of power,” she said. “I
haven’t evolved quite beyond that. I
think a lot of people advance more
spiritually than me.
“The way I look at things is so
opposite from the mainstream
breeder culture,” she said. “I don’t
reconcile every time 1 have inter
course. I do not think of conceiving a
child and family structure and my
man and me doing the whole domes
tic thing.”
Although she said she liked the
idea of a relationship, she said she did
not have time for a traditional one.

touring, I haven’t been able to think
of them seriously,” she said. “Most of
the men I’ve met have been far too
jealous for me to waste my time.”
Jones, one man with whom she
has invested a great deal of time,
certainly has not been a waste.
“John Paul Jones is a wonderful
musician, and he’s a great person,”
she said. “I don’t think his peers in
Led Zeppelin have the guts to do this
nature of work.”
Galas admires Jones’ family life
as well.
“He has a very strong wife and
three daughters. They’re very strong
women. They’re great,” she said.
“I’ve met two of them, and I love
them.”
Gal&s said she would continue
working and touring with Jones while
pursuing her solo interests.
The two will perform Sunday at 7
