Clinton faces fight for control By John King AP Political Writer A surly midterm campaign sure to increase Republican clout in Con gress closed Monday with President Clinton imploring voters to keep Democrats in control. The fight for the Senate, and several statehouses, was so tight it hinged on which party proved best at getting voters to the polls. On election eve, a new national poll showed Clinton's approval rat ing over 50 percent for the first time in months, and Democrats running even with Republicans when voters were asked which party’s candidate they planned to support for House. But that good news for Democrats was tempered by this: 73 percent of the ABC; News poll respondents de scribed themselves as dissatisified or angry voters. Clinton rode such dis content to the White House two years ago, but this year those voters said they favored Republicans. Federal Election Commission fig ures showed the pricetag for Cam paign ’94 was on track to pass the $500 million mark — and that’s just for House and Senate contests. Simpson murder trial backed down from his threat Monday and allowed cameras to stay in court. Superior Court Judge Lance Ito said the media have been more responsible since an erroneous KNBC-TV report in September that Nicole Brown Simpson’s blood had been found on a sock in Simpson’s home. The judge also acknowleged that any inaccurate reporting hap pened outside the courtroom, and not because cameras were inside. “I do not make any decisions in this courtroom based on public opinion polls,” Ito said, sitting beside 21 cartons filled with nearly 15,000 letters, most of them urging him to bar cameras. Tailhook, too SAN DIEGO (AP) — After Tailhook, the Navy made its sailors and aviators go to sexual harassment seminars. It gave them hot line numbers to report problems. And it sternly warned anyone that harassment would hurt careers. And yet another scandal has emerged, this time at a Navy training school where seven instructors are accused of sexually harassing their students. No charges have been filed and the investigation is far from over, said Lt. Patrick Dennison, a Navy spokesman. But the ftiror has critics wondering whether the Navy will ever change. Instructors at the Training Center in San Diego are accused of verbally and physically badgering 16 female students. The alleged abuse occurred over 18 months.
