But its live performances and its album tell “A Different Story.” The band’s debut album has been steadily gaining popularity and higher spots on the charts. Guitarist and vocalist Caleb Guillotte said, “The album was recorded two years ago, and we were only three weeks old. I’m not saying the album is bad, but we sound a lot better live. “We’re a real exciting band. We’re not just some guys who look at their shoes and sing at you,” he said. Dead Eye Dick will be sharing some of its excitement tonight at the Royal Grove. This will be its first appearance in Nebraska, and Guillotte said the band members looked forward to playing here. “The song (“New Age Girl”) was popu lar in Nebraska early on, both in sales as well as radio play, especially in the small towns. The band is based in New Orleans and has been together since October 1992. ✓ “When we first started playing, we dc cided to put this record together to try and make a name for ourselves in the South east,” Guillotte said. Dead Eye Dick then sent its promos to radio stations throughout the region, he said. “After like the third spin, ‘New Age Girl’ became the most requested song in Atlanta.” The band steadily gained popularity since then and eventually signed with the record label Ichiban. “We’ve pretty much been on the road since we signed with Ichiban in the end of May,” he said. The band’s eccentric moniker had a fairly straightforward origin. “Dead Eye Dick is the title of a Kurt Vbnnegut book, the first one that I read,” Guillotte said. “I presented it to the guys, and they found it mnemonically accept able” Just as difficult to get out of your head is Show: Dead Eye Dick At: The Royal Grove, 340 Cornhusker Highway Time: Monday night, November 7 Tickets: $10 at the door the band’s first single, “New Age Girl,” a highly contagious strain of the alternative pop virus. He said the vegetarian Mary Moon from the song “New Age Girl” wasn’t based on anyone specific. “Ninety-nine percent of the time I write the music before I write the lyrics. I just made the name rhyme. 1 “New Age Girl” is going to be the lead track for the soundtrack of Jim Caney’s new movie, “Dumb and Dumber.” The film will be in theaters on Dec. 16, and the soundtrack, which also features the Crash Test Dummies, Green Jelly and the Buttholc Surfers, will be in stores on Nov. 22. Dead Eye Dick just finished filming a new video for “New Age Girl,” incorporat ing scenes from the movie in it. The band also recently returned from a European tour. Guillotte said they had problems getting used to the quietness of the European crowds while the band was playing. “There were these quiet German crowds who would stand there until the song was over and make sure that you didn’t trick them. “But they’re a genial, music-loving people.” Dead Eye Dick’s plans for the future are relatively simple. “We’ll be Hying to sell this record, and we go to Europe again at the beginning of January,” he said. “Other than that, we’re going to play and Elay and play and hope that we eventually ave time to record a new album,” Guillotte said. - .
