Ernie Chambers as a write-in candidate for lieutenant governor. Jose Soto, a 45-year-old Hispanic activist, said he would fill the second spot on Chambers’ gubernatorial write-in bid. Chambers announced on Sept. 21 that he would enter the gubernatorial race as a death-penalty protest candidate. Soto said -he spoke with Cham bers, who encouraged him to run as a write-in for lieutenant governor. Soto said he opposed the death penalty and believed Chambers was a good minority leader. “It is important that we acknowl edge that there are many voices in the community we call Nebraska,” Soto said. “It is important that people of color recognize leadership ... and support each other.” Attorney General Don Stenberg issued an opinion on Oct. 20 that said Chambers must choose a running mate for write-in votes to count. Chambers has said he would choose a running mate “under no circum stances.” Soto said his decision to run with Chambers was not influenced by the attorney general’s opinion. He said he had discussed the opinion with Chambers and agreed that it was flawed. “It (his candidacy) is a response to my belief that we must be willing to be active,” Soto said. Soto said many reasons led him to run, but his interest increased with the recent death of Francisco Renteria. Renteria died on Oct 1. after a scuffle with university and Lincoln police officers. m f All You Care Tb Eat Original Sauce Spaghetti, Plus a Trip Tb Our Garden Fresh Salad Bar & _ I Ttao Slices Garlic Cheese Bread ■ Offer good for Lunch or Dinner - Mon Tues & Weds onfy Musi ■ present coupon when ordering Not valid wi*h any other coupon m Expfrw* 11/30/94 ■ 228 N. 12th LINCOLN H H VNBHIW ASUN holding mock election From Stiff Woporti The Association of Students of the University of Nebraska will hold a mock election today at both Nebraska Unions, at 14th and R streets and at 38th and Holdrege streets.
