Huskers win but can’t rely on talent to fuel the fire By Tim P«ar»ofi Senior Editor With a match against Colorado just around the corner, the Nebraska volleyball team may have taken a step back Saturday night. Even though the Cornhuskers de feated Iowa State 15-11, 15-3. 9-15, 15-5 before an NU Coliseum crowd of 4,116, Pettit said his team had been better. “We looked tentative,” he said. “The last couple times out. we looked stronger.” , But the Huskers did manage to improve their record to 19-0 and 6-0 in the conference. “They know they didn’t play well,” Pettit said. “Even though they didn’t play well, they won. We’re for tunate that we have the talent to do that, but we can’t do that for very long.” The Cyclones, who won one game from the Huskers in last weekend’s match in Ames, Iowa, started out tough, jumping out to a 9-4 lead. Nebraska battled back, though. With outside hitter Kate Crnich serving, Nebraska rolled off five con secutive points to tie up the game. With the score 12-11 Nebraska, the No. 2 Huskers scored the final three points to win the first game. Crnich started in place of sopho more outside hitter Maria Hedbeck, and she responded with five kills and a team-high 16 digs. “She’s been playing really well in practice,” Pettit said of Crnich. “She’s doing things I want others to do. She’s had good intensity and good t^e second game, the Huskers came out on fire. Behind Allison Weston, Nebraskajumpedouttoa 10 0 lead. In that string, Weston had four blocks and three kills. Overall, the 6-foot-2 middle blocker had 18 kills and four service aces. “One thing we’ve been working on is blocking and defense, but the de fense didn’t show up,” Weston said. The blocking did, though. The Huskers had four solo blocks — three by Weston — and 16 assisted blocks. Iowa State battled back from the 10-0 deficit with three points, but Nebraska put the match away with five straight points. In the third game, the Huskers had chances to put the match away, but the Cyclones wouldn’t let them. Iowa Slate took a 5-1 lead. The Huskers kept coming back, but Cyclone setter Kary Law put the game away with a kill. Just as they did in the second game, the Huskers started out fast in the fourth game, taking an 11-2 lead on their way to a 15-5 win. But Pettit said the Huskers must improve, especially in their defense and serving, if they want to win at Illinois on Tuesday and against Colo rado in Lincoln on Saturday. “I don’t think we served very well,” Pettit said. “In general, 14 ser vice errors is awfully high for us." Weston said the Huskers had prob lems Saturday night, and she didn’t know why. “It’s kind of disappointing,” she said. “We should’ve been really pre pared for them. I don’t know what the problem was." Soccer team loses to Stanford From Staff Wtports The Nebraska soccer team was tied with the No. 3 Stanford Cardinal until the last 10 minutes of Sunday's match. You have just got to go out and get the thing recovered and get the ball in the hands of our of fense and let them get going." The Huskers' ensuing drive stalled at their own 42-yard line, and Darin Erstad punted into the end zone for a touchback. Seven plays later. After one rush by fullback Cory Schlcsinger and five by Phillips, Berringer threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Mark Gilman with 4:56 to go in the third quarter, and Nebraska took a 21 -0 lead. A three-and-out series by Missouri returned the ball to the Huskers, and Berringer teamed up with split end Brendan Holbein for a 30-yard touch down strike to increase Nebraska’s 1 lead to 28-0 with 1:36 left in the third quarter. Missouri finally got on the board when Handy connected with Rahsetnu Jenkins for a 34-yard touch down pass. On its next drive, Nebraska suf fered a blow when No. 2 quarterback Malt Turman sustained a badly bruised shoulder on a late hit out of bounds by Jerome Madison. “It may be two weeks,” Osborne said" Sunday. “Maybe three weeks. Maybe he will return this week.” True freshman Monte Christo, whom the Huskers had hoped to redshirt, was forced to enter the game. “We didn’t want to play Christo if we could help it,” Osborne said. “But it looks like Matt’s out for a long enough time that Monte has to play. -1 lory with two late goals for a 4-2 fi nal score.
