1 “Divine Intervention” Slayer American Records Grade: C Just in time for Halloween, the lords of death metal have risen from whatever demonic grave in which they have entombed them selves. Mcrciiuiiy suciu suite me band's 1991 release, “Decade of Aggression.” it seems the members of Slayer have spent the last three years saving up all their anger, hatred, misery and aggression for this spew of raw sewage titled “Di vine intervention.” The “music” itself need not be described in great length; it's the same four notes and break-neck tempo of the last four Slayer al bums. So let’s examine the lyrics. On the second song, “Sex. Mur der. Art.,” vocalist Tom Araya screams. “You’re nothing / An ob ject of animation / A subjective mannequin / Beaten into submis sion / Raping again and again.” One really has to wonder where they get their lyrical inspirations. Then there’s song No. 8, “Se renity In Murder,” where Araya la ments the joys of homicide. And what Slayer album would be complete without Satanism and necrophilia? On the ninth song, “213, Araya pays homage to that, uh, form of entertainment. “Erotic sensations tingle my spine / A dead body lying next to mine / Smooth blue black lips /1 start salivating as we kiss ... How I love to kill you.” These guys are sick puppies. ' The rest of the album touches on subjects such as violence, blood shed, insanity, SAM, anarchy and oppression. Slayer, comprised of vocalist/ bassist Araya, guitarists Jeff Hahneman and Kerry King and drummer Paul Bostaph, have al ways been known for their utter lack of respect for rules and de cency. They say what they want and never mind the PMRC. For that, at least, they deserve some respect. They portray the world as they sec it through their music. But c'mon, guys, things really aretfl that bad. — Ann Stack I Don’t miss the Spook tatular j SnniPeraavg Sale S October 17 - 31 10% - 75% Off S Come check out " our new fall line of apparel! Alien conquest roiled in movie By J—I Btrauch Senior Reporter The plot of “The Puppet Masters" is pretty much a garden-variety, weird-aliens-controlling-earthlings to-conquer-the-world kind of thing, but the special effects make it as in novative as “Pinocchio.” Based on the book by science-fic tion master Robert A. Heinlein, the alieivcreatures are given life by two time Academy Award-winner Greg Cannom. Cannom’s creations give the film a layer of terrifying credibility that science-fiction movies of previous decades have lacked. There is noth ing too frightening about tcntacled paper-m£che monsters mechanically lurching out of spaceships or plastic costumed anti-heroes leaping out of a black lagoon. But when one of these parasitic aliens swings about the room on its prehensile tendril looking for a hu man host to attach itself to, and it doesn’t look bogus, it really strength ens the horror power of the film. The story is nothing too novel. A batch of leeches from outer space pick Earth as their next sucking ground and quickly take over a small town. The government is all over the invasion and quickly investigates. The covert Office of Scientific Intel ligence (OSI) forms a team to first discover the nature of the aliens and then to find a way to stop their glo bal conquest. It bodes ill for the good guys after the Army is sent in to quarantine the area and is subsequently taken over. But in true B-movic fashion, the he roes find a way to stop the rapid spread of the xenomorphs. This film probably won't make a loud noise at the Oscars, especially in the acting categories, but the per Movie: “The Puppet Masters” Rating: R Stars: Donald Sutherland, Eric Thai. Julie Warner. Yaphet Kotto Director: Stuart Ormc Grade: B Five Words: Special effects make great B-flick formers do a solid job in their roles. Donald Sutherland is convincing as Andrew Nivens, the fanatic direc tor of OSI. He is commanding on screen as always, and his perfor mance adds to the film's belicvabil i{y Eric Thai portrays Sam Nivens, Andrew's cynical son and an OSI agent. His acting is mediocre, but it doesn't detract much from the movie as a whole. Another actor exercising unexcep tional abilities is Julie Warner. She rather transparently plays Mary Scfton, a brilliant and cocky NASA scientist. The film is violent, but in fairly startling ways. At one point Sam tries to stop an alien that has attached it self to one of his female co-workers, and he has a rather brutal fistfight with her. At another point, the aliens use children to combat-an armed forces' tank division. Again, the film's real ism is heightened by the filmmakers' refusal to shy away from possibly re pugnant violence. “The Puppet Masters” is not a breakthrough in science-fiction, but it is a good story and a lot of fun to watch. y^^Homecoming Special $10.00 Off Fall Set CaM $ 7.00 Off Nail Fill-la 421-3232 Na charge far broke* Nails (or an app0intment dVifilUt •• IlftlAf) Pleaae mention ad ^ 5600 So. 48th Just South of HWY 2whan calling J BE PART OF THE CURE I \ r.
