NU win doesn’t impress pollsters
, Huskers drop in poll
despite 17-6 victory
over Wildcats
From Staff Woporto
Nebraska’s 17-6 victory over No.
16 Kansas Slate on Saturday in Man
hattan, Kan., was not enough to push
the Comhuskers into the top spot in
the major polls.
The Huskers, who were awarded
the most first-place votes in both the
Associated Press and the USA TO
DAY/CNN coaches’ poll, fell to third
in the AP poll despite No. 1 Florida’s
36-33 loss to Auburn.
Penn State, a 31-24 winner over
Michigan.
vaulted to me
No. 1 spot in
both polls.
Colorado,
which beat
Oklahoma 45
7 in Boulder.
Colo., on Sat
OsboriM urday night,
moved ahead of the Huskers in the
AP poll.
Nebraska coach Tom Osborne
shrugged off the drop, but he said the
Huskers seemed to be in a similar
situation last season.
“I guess that’s what the vote is,?’
he said. “There’s not much I can do
about that. I think we are seeing some
of the same things we saw last year,
where commentary shapes a lot of
public thinking.”
It has been almost 20 years since
Nebraska beat a ranked team and sub
sequently dropped in the AP poll. On
Dec. 31, 1974, eighth-ranked Ne
braska beat Florida 13-10 in the
Sugar Bowl and fell to ninth.
“I think we beat a good team yes
terday,” Osborne said. “I think Kan
sas State is a good football team, and
we’ll find out a little more next week
when they play Colorado.”

he said. “The fullback hurt them in
the fourth quarter.”
The Wildcats went three plays and
out on their next two drives. May
completed only 10 of 27 passes in the
second half, and the Huskers sacked
him six times.
Osborne said the Husker defense,
especially the secondary, stopped the
Wildcats when it counted.
Kansas State used a no-back of
fense at times, which forced Ed
Stewart and Dumas to cover the ex
tra receiver.
“You can’t say enough good about
them,” secondary coach George
Darlington said. “You put one of
those great receivers on a linebacker,
and you figure they’re going to light
up the scoreboard.
“Eddie Stewart and Troy Dumas
had a tougher job than any of the de
fensive backs.”
Erstad scaled the game by drill
ing a 24-yard field goal with 1:32 left
in the game.
“We had some unbelievable near
misses.” Kansas State coach Bill
Snyder said. “Then in the second half
our field position was just terrible.
“We just couldn't get out of the
shadows. We get a big play and come
back the next play and get a penalty.”
