University libraries acquire Emily Dickinson collection By Nick Wlltgen Staff Reporter The University of Ncbraska-Lin coln library system has bought $175,000 of Emily Dickinson mate rials. The Cliffs Charitable Foundation of Lincoln, with the help of Carlton and Territa Lowenberg of Walnut Creek, Calif., helped bring the col lection to UNL. The Cliffs Foundation collected donations from corporations and University of Nebraska alumni and contributed them to University of Nebraska Foundation, a non-profit corporation. The foundation then bought the collection from the Lowenbergs. The collection includes items pro duced by Dickinson and items related to her work. For example, it features playbills from a 1970s stage adapta tion of Dickinson’s “The Bells of Amherst.” The collection also con tains textbooks she may have stud ied. Books describing the history and geography of her hometown of Northampton, Mass., add to the ref erence material on Dickinson’s life and regional influences. Kent Hendrickson, dean of librar ies at UNL, said the collection would be a valuable research and teaching tool. “It’s not only important because Emily Dickinson herself and her writ ing were important but because the collection also reflects her times and the culture and society she lived in.” Carlton Lowenberg said he and his wife spent 10 years collecting all the Dickinson writings they could find. “When I retired, my wife and I thought what we might collect,” he said. “We chose Dickinson because of the mystical quality of her poetry mixed up with some very real insights into nature, man, death.” Carlton said he and his wife col lected 11,000 Dickinson materials from all around the United States, England, Europe and Japan. They look two month-long trips a year to tour bookstores for books and other materials. Lowenberg said he chose UNL as the collection recipient for several reasons. “I was motivated to sell as quickly as possible, and Nebraska seemed to be at hand,” he said. Lowenberg also said UNL’s excel lent musical collection was a factor because Dickinson composed great music. Finally, Lowenberg is a good friend of Cliff Hillcgass, founder of the Cliffs Foundation. Charles Mignon, a UNL English professor, said Dickinson's impor tance had increased in recent decades. “Her work is very important, be cause she is one of the two major po ets of the 19th century,” he said. “In retrospect, she shares attention with (Walt) Whitman for her anticipation of modernist themes.” Judge continues robbery hearing until November From SUIT Reports Thursday’s preliminary hearing for an Arkansas prison escapee cap tured in downtown Lincoln last month was continued until Nov. 4. Judge Jack Lindner rescheduled the hearing for Chad Beers because of time limitations Thursday. Testimony Thursday included that of two employees of the Ben net Cor ner Stop, located about 10 miles southeast of Lincoln. Beers is charged with the attempted armed robbery of the store. Andrew Stebbing, a deputy sher iff with the Lancaster County Sheriff's Department, also gave tes timony. Stebbing was involved in the chase leading to Beers’ arrest.
