String ensembles bring audience, performers togetner By tttvn Sparling Staff Reporter Two string ensembles will be join ing forces tonight to kick off the Lin coln Friends of Chamber Music’s 1994-95 season. The concert is an ticipated to be exciting and educa tional for both the audience and per formers. The concert features the Angeles and the Alexander Quartets. The two groups will perform in Kimball Hall separately and together as an octet Stephen Buhler, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln English professor, got involved with the Lincoln Friends of Chamber Music about five years ago when he first began teaching here. Buhler has become responsible for much the group’s publicity in the last three years. “My involvement was simply a realization that I cared about this music very much, but I was not very knowledgeable, and I had had lim ited exposure to it,” Buhler said. The Lincoln Friends of Chamber Music thought Buhler would be ideal for getting the word out because he is an English professor, he said. Since its inception in 1981, the Alexander String Quartet has earned a well-deserved following. It was the first quartet to win the Concert Art ists Guild International Award, and the first to win Britain’s Portsmouth International String Quartet compe tition. The Angeles Quartet came to gether for what was meant to be a one-time performance, but the rap port between the players during the concert led to their establishing a permanent group. i Both groups, especially the Alexander Quartet, are interested in letting people know about their mu sic, Buhler said. They want to help it seem as accessible as it genuinely can be, with a kind of teacherlike zeal. They can achieve this zeal because of the advantage they have of being in the smaller venues, like Kimball Hall. “You’re not just a consumer of the music, but a participant,'' he said. “Rather than being what we too often become, passive consumers;— especially with ‘serious’ music where we don’t dare involve ourselves — here we can become, in a variety of ways, collaborators with the perform ers. who are themselves collaborat ing with the composers.” Unlike the other three concerts of Concert: Lincoln Friends of Chamber Music At: Kimball Recital Hall Time: 8 o’clock tonight Tickets: $25, $5 for students; available from Lied box office this year’s Lincoln Friends of Cham ber Music series, tonight’s show will not be in the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. Buhler said tonight’s music will be in the Kimball Hall, because it required a slightly larger audito rium. Despite the success of the Lied Center for Performing Arts, the Lin cum menus ui i ii<imuci music is still going strong after 30 years be* cause of the intimacy of the smaller concert halls. “You really get a sense of these people as other human beings,” Buhlcr said. Starting this year the Angeles Quartet will begin recording all of the quartets that Haydn ever composed The recordings will eventually be available on compact disks. The group thinks the project will take about seven years to complete. Buhler said this evening's concert would be like a preview to that project. UNL music professor John Bailey will be giving a talk 30 minutes prior to the concert. $3.00 per day for 15 words on Individual student and student organization ads. $4.00 per day for 15 words on non-student ads. $.15 each additional word. $.75 bHHng charge.
