NU Cross country teams
to face tough competition
From Staff Woports
The Nebraska men’s and women's
cross country teams will face their
toughest competition of the season
this weekend at the Penn State Invi
tational.
The women’s team will face 11 of
the top 17 teams in the country with
out its senior captain Kris
Ellenbeckcr, who will redshirt the rest
of the season due to illness.
“She has had some trouble with
asthma, and she and the doctors de
cided that she probably shouldn’t be
running right now,” Huskcr coach Jay
Dirksen said.
“Wc have other seniors to provide
leadership, but the bad thing is she
is the captain,” Dirksen said. “I’m
sure our team will step up.”
Dirksen said Nebraska’s competi
tion will be unlike any other compe
tition they have seen.
“This will be a much tougher meet
than Minnesota, but the competition
is only good for us. Whenever you get
a chance to run against teams that are
ranked higher than you it is a great
opportunity,” Dirksen said.
May

rcer passing charts with 3,635 yards.
• May has thrown just one inter
ception in his last 249 pass attempts.
He has thrown 128 straight passes in
1994 without an interception, and he
could break Mike Gundy’s Big Eight
record of 138 on Saturday.
• The reigning All-Big Eight
quarterback, who is a projected first
round NFL draft pick, already ranks
fourth in yardage in Big Eight con
ference history among quarterbacks
playing only two seasons.
Osborne said a key to containing
May would be a heavy pass rush. Last
year, the Huskers got to May only
twice.
--
“He runs out of the shotgun, and
they protect him well,” Osborne said.
May said he and the rest of the
Wildcats were thinking only about
Saturday’s game, not about Kansas
State’s 25 consecutive losses to Ne
braska.
“I’ve only played them once,” May
said. “So I’m just going on my record
and not the past, I know I’m 0-1 vs.
Nebraska; I’m not 0-25.”
May, who transferred to Kansas
State from Cal-State Fullerton in
1991, said it would be great if he
could end his career at .500 against
the Huskers.
“This is my last shot,” he said, “so
I’ve got to come out and play the best
game I’ve ever played.”
