Mixed music to rock three bars By Suan iwccairny Staff Reporter The sounds of rock will be abun dant on West O Street this weekend. Over three nights, 36 bands will play at three bars. The Hurricane. Knickerbockers and P.O. Pears will be hosts for the Grain Reaper’s Har vest Ball. Tobie Stratford, organizer of the Harvest Ball, has been planning the event since May. She said she chose the three bars because of their loca tion. “West O is really developing for live music on a consistent basis,” she said. Some of the local bands that will play in the Harvest Ball include No Left Stone, Amor’ce, Heroes and Vil lains and Morphine Angel. “I really hope the people are there for this,” said John Fynbu, lead singer of Morphine Angel. Fynbu described Morphine Angel's sound as post-punk-gothic rock. Angel’s heavy use of drum ma chines and use of smoke on the stage are part of its gothic trademark. “We’re always gagging from the smoke, but we don’t terribly overdo it,” Fynbu said, “It’s nothing like Kiss.” Morphine Angel will be playing Thursday at Knickerbockers along with Tragedy Playground. Grimace and St. Nickelhead. The lineup at Knickerbockers features a harder lineup than The Hurricane or P.O. Pears. Stratford said she tried to ca ter each band’s sound to the bars when deciding the lineup. “P.O. Pears has very danccablc music and Knickerbockers has a lot of the harder sounding bands, while The Hurricane is somewhere in the middle,” she said. Ernie Pulos, who handles promo tions at Knickerbockers, said that the lineup at Knickerbockers followed a theme throughout the Ball. “Thursday features a local alter native lineup while Friday is more blucsish, and Saturday features more touring bands,” Pulos said. “We’re Heroes and Villains are, from loft: Kevin Pond, Chris Hadfleld, John Lefler Jr. and Tony Lamar. Event: Grain Reaper’s Harvest Ball At: The Hurricane. Knickerbockers and PO. Pears Times: today, Friday and Saturday, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Tickets: $13 for all three nights, available at Twisters; $6 for one night, at the door really proud to be a part of this.” In addition to local bands, the Harvest Ball will also feature some regional bands. The Kansas City, Mo., band Solefish, Omaha's Beef Curtains, Acoustic Juice from Lawrence, Kan., and Book of Wheels, a Minneapolis band, are some of the featured bands from outside of Lin coln. Scott Hcrold, a member of Book of Wheels, also is a former Lincolnile. His band's performance Saturday at Knickerbockers, along with Cello phane Ceiling, Dashboard Mary and Sufferbus, will be his first in Lincoln since he left in 1989. Book of Wheels has been together since 1991, Herold said. Since the band formed, they have gained a growing cult following around Min neapolis, he said. Some of the clubs that Herold has played in Minneapolis include Sev enth Street Entry and Grand Slam, a nightclub owned by the former Prince. Herold said that Book of Wheels had a different sound of music beyond the mainstream. Many of Wheel’s lyrics rely on storytelling. “Without trying to sound preten tious. our music is about how the technology and the isolation of our lifestyle has blinded us to see how we see each other and ourselves,” Herold said. Tickets are available at Twisters, one of the event’s sponsors. Tickets arc $13 for all three nights and all three bars. For people who only want to see one night of the Harvest Ball, tickets arc $6 at the door. The price covers all 12 bands playing that night. -- *! $ Today Friday Saturday Knickerbocker'^ 901 ’O’ St. 3:30 p.m. Tragedy Playground 9:45 p.m. Grimace 11:00 p.m. St. Nickelhead 12:15 p.m. Morphine Angel Knickerbocker'® 901 ’O' St. 3:30 p.m. Amor’ee 9:45 p.m. Stone Sundae 11:00 p.m. Flatwater Circu® 12:15 p.m. 5i$ Sky Showcaee Knickerbocker** 901 ’O’ St. ■ 3:30 p.m. Book of Wheels 9:45 p.m. Cellophane Celling 11:00 p.m. Dashboard Mary 12:15 p.m. Sufferbus P.O.
