Invite was learning experience for NU tennis coach By Dw>k Samton Senior Reporter Nebraska men's tennis coach Kerry McDermott learned a little about Wichita State last yvcckcnd at the ._. Huskcr Invitational. But. more importantly. McDermott found out a little more about his own team. McDermott s interest in the Wichita State Shockers is because of the regional championships in Wichita, Kan., on Oct. 21 -24. The Shockers will McDermott be one of the Huskers'op ponents. Region 5 consists of schools in the Big Eight and Missouri Valley conferences. At the Husker Invite, the Iowa Hawkeyes captured the top spots in three of the first four “/felt Iowa, Wichita State and ourselves were pretty much the top teams, and we each got three (wins), so it went the way I thought. ” ■ KERRY MCDERMOTT NU men’s tennis coach flights in singles action, but McDermott wasn't particularly interested in Iowa’s performance. “It was a good competitive tournament with Iowa and Wichita State,” he said. “We saw where we compare to some people, but we es pecially got to sec how we compare to Wichita State.” McDermott is looking forward to the re gional tournament. “There won't be any team scoring in that, cither, so we’ll concentrate on individual i/dmun LOTI/ ur% Nebraska’s Andy Davis returns a shot from Wichita State’s Sandor Jongert during last weekend’s Husker Invita tional. In doubles, we're still kind of experi menting right now. We can maybe get one doubles team in there.” McDermott got just what he expected last weekend at the Huskcr Invite. Nebraska won three flights. Thomas Wheat in fifth-flight singles, Dino Teppara in sixth flight singles and Teppara and Henrik Ander son in third-flight doubles. No team scores were kept. Iowa and Wichita State also earned the lop spot in three flights each. “It was a good tournament for us.” McDermott said. “It was a pretty good tourna ment for us to be in, competition-wise. “I felt Iowa, Wichita State and ourselves were pretty much the top teams, and we each got three (wins), so it went the way I thought.” The Huskcr netters will have some extra time to prepare for the competition they will face in Wichita. They passed up an invitation to play in the ITA All-American Tournament, which began today in Austin, Texas. McDermott said Nebraska decided to stay in Lincoln because of the tournament’s length. “It used to be that you went down there, you had to play in a pre-qualifying series be fore you got into anything at all,” he said. “It took a scries of days that the guys had to be away from school — probably five or six — and it didn’t even guarantee anything. “It would have been so much missed school, and since we try to emphasize academics, we’d rather just stay here and practice hard during that time.” Are You Late? • Free Pregnancy testing • Options counseling • Abortion procedures to 14 weeks • Saturday appointments available • Student discounts • Visa, Mastercard ^ Women's Medical Center of Nebraska 4930 "L" Street Omaha, NE 68117 (402) 734-7500 ~oll free (800) 877-6337 TIMEX FITNESS WEEK m-m PRESENTED BY OCEAN SPRAY & CONCEPT n flV OCTOBER 16-20 Events Scheduled Include: Aerobics,Step Aerobics, Water Aerobics, Nutrition Assessment, Body Fat Assessment, Triathlon(Bike, Row, Stair), Family Fitness, Cholesterol Screening, Blood Pressure Assessment, and THE WORLD'S LARGEST AEROBICS CLASS!
