Probe Continued from Page 1 hers’ account: “wrong ” Chambers refused to reveal his source Tuesday, but said the details in his three-page letter should stand. “If they say I’m iResponsible, then let them show responsibility by in forming the public,” Chambers said. Chambers wrote that Renteria had suffered five broken ribs near his sternum and had bruises to his neck, back and the back of his legs. There was vomit in Renteria’s tra chea down to his lungs and the brain was “greatly enlarged due to lack of oxygen,” Chambers wrote. Chambers also wrote that a state patrol investigator had twice denied the family’s and their lawyer’s re quest to view the body after the death. The family “never saw the body of their loved one,” Chambers wrote. In the letter. Chambers also wrote that the night of the incident, police grabbed Renteria’s hair, kicked him in the legs and genitals, kneed him in the ribs when he was down, and “placed a knee on (his) neck, grabbed his head and twisted it to one side.” Casady would not comment on Chambers’ statements, but said the six police officers involved partici pated in the struggle at different times and to varying degrees. Police did not use weapons to sub due Renteria. Casady said. Instead, police squeezed pressure points and used strength maneuvers and holds to restrain him. Casady said Tuesday that “one or more lower-body kicks were em ployed,” but would not comment on whether any of those tactics could have resulted in the injuries Cham bers alleged. Casady said two of the officers had some background in Spanish, but they did not attempt to speak to Renteria in his native language. Renteria did not speak English. Chambers said the county attorney’s office and Casady at first called Renteria's death a possible stroke, aneurism or mystery to try to exonerate the officers involved. Now, information is being released in a slow and manipulative manner, he said. “They’re playing a game,” Cham bers said. “Avery cynical and dishon est game.” Lacey said he wouldn’t “piece meal information out that docs not have any sense.” The facts have to be compared with all the other details, once they become available, he said. Chambers also has called for a federal investigation by the U S. Jus tice Department into police actions, which he alleged violated Renteria’s constitutional and civil rights. Lacey said a federal investigation was unnecessary and that local authori ties were capable of handling the case and presenting it to the grand jury. Selective Service Registration. It's Quick.
