Philly soloists perform at Lied From Staff Woporto _ The Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia will welcome two guests this weekend at their Lied Center performance. Ignat Solzhenitsyn, son of Pulitzer Prize winning author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, will perform and guest conduct the ensemble Sat urday night. “If his name were Jones or Smith, it wouldn’t make any difference,” said Marc Mostovoy, the group’s founder and musical director. “He’s a unique musical talent and my prediction is he’s going to be among the top in the world with a few more years under his belt.” Although her name is less familiar, Lisamarie Vanna is excited to perform in Lin coln, Mostovoy said. It’s her hometown. The two musicians join an unique group that performs as a modern orchestra, Mostovoy said, but upholds early traditions. The Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia will perform Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $26, $22 and $18 and half-price for students. Ed Wood Continued from Page 1 livers a truly Oscar-caliber performance as the washed-up, drug-addicted vampire legend, Bela Lugosi. The realism with which Burton treats Lugosi’s habit adds a needed dimension of humanism to an actor who was never really given a fair shake by the Hollywood jungle. Landau gets all of the movie’s best lines — most of which are unprintable here — and bears an uncanny resemblance to the Hungar ian prince of darkness. Tim Burton comes through for his fans yet again. Employing black-and-white photogra phy, and an obvious mastery of lighting for this medium, Burton outdoes himself by bring ing the feel of film from the 1950s into the 1990s with satisfying results. Look for the brilliant lighting employed in a bar scene and a great reflection shot of Lugosi’s track-marked arm in a car windshield as just a sample of the overall effectiveness of the cinematography. Burton is dark and brooding in many scenes (a shocker), and employs a miniature Holly wood of the ’50s for his opening and closing credits. The effect is enough to make B-movie fans think the genre is back. Movie: “Ed Wood” Rating: R Stars: Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette, Bill Murray Director: Tim Burton Grade: A Five Words: Burton’s homage to Hollywood’s worst Fans of Wood particularly will enjoy the clone employed to portray wrestler-turned thespian Tor Johnson, fittingly played by George “The Animal” Steele. While holding a penchant for angora sweat ers and women’s underwear, Wood struggled, and failed, to produce a great film. He never gave up, and even the death of his “star did not deter him from continuing to try. While the worst director of all time made the worst film of all time in “Plan 9 From Outer Space,” Wood holds a special place in the hearts of those fans who enjoy a big slice of Horrors Continued from Page 9 entailed much work. “It keeps me really, really busy,” he said. “I only get to catch my breath for about 10 minutes during the whole show.” The play has a smaller cast than most shows. This is beneficial for both the director and the cast members. “It makes for a pretty tight unit,” he said. Trutna said the smaller cast gave him a chance to get to know everyone. “People get more of a chance to talk to others intimately,” he said. The show opened up on Wednesday night to a large and appreciative crowd. “The opening performance went re ally well,” Trutna said. “It was nicely attended, and the audience was really receptive.” “It was a sellout crowd,” Adams said. “It was wonderful, exactly what we hoped for. “The audience was very responsive. They loved it.” CLASSIFIED INDEX .v v.y.w*J 02 Appliance* 05 Bicycles 10 Books 13 Clothing 16 Computers 20 Furniture 30 Jewelry 40 Misc.
