New apartments to open near campus By cnlMrlne Blalock Staff Reporter Students looking for a home close to campus can rent a spot in a new apartment complex located at 17th and Holdrege streets — across the street from UNL Police and Parking Services. Kris Sonderup, who has owned Cycle Works for the past 13 years, has turned his family’s old Lincoln Dairy Store, which was open from the 1930s to the 1970s, into an apartment com plex. Sonderup said he chose to turn the old building into apartments because the land was too good to use for stor age and too far from the beaten path for retail or office space. “(Building the complex) cost about the same as putting up a new building,” Sonderup said. Construction began more than a year ago and is scheduled to end this week, Sonderup said. The apartment complex has 21 apartments. There are two two-bedroom apart ments that already are rented, he said. Three are one-bedroom apartments, and the rest are etticiencies. Included in the apartment are cable hookups, a laundry and a self defrosting refrigerator. The apart ments have no ovens. The only cook ing appliances in the kitchen are the microwave and two burners attached to the counter top. “Most of the students I talked to use a burner and a microwave," Sonderup said. Apartments will be leased for one year and will cost from $350 to $475 per month. No smoking will be al lowed in the apartment building. - Police Report Beginning midnight Tuesday 9:22 a.m. —Accidental security alarm trip. 10:45 a.m. — Injury/sickness, person refused medical attention, Nebraska Center for Continuing Education. 12:56 p.m. — Wallet stolen, Campus Recreation Center, $30 loss. 1:39 p.m. — Vandalism/criminal mis chief, window broken, 14th and Avery streets, $400 damage. 8:52 p.m. — Hit-and-run accident, 30th and Vine streets. 10:27 p.m. — Suspicious party, Love Library. 11:01 p.m. — Person with warrant trans ported to jail, Nebraska Union. 12:03 a.m. — Alcohol/drunk, Nebraska Union, transferred to detoxification cen ter. 1:06 a.m. — Larceny, bicycle, Westbrook Music Building, $1,400 loss. 1:49 a.m. —Alarm.
