Lee film honors
baseball great
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Spike
Lee will write and direct a movie
about baseball great Jackie
Robinson and says he’s discussed
the role with Denzel Washington.
“I see this as a great American
epic, the same way we saw
Malcolm X’s life. We’re going to
treat the subject like that,” Lee said
after sealing the rights last week
with Robinson’s widow. “This is
about American history.” —j—
Washington starred in Lee’s
“Malcolm X.”
Robinson was the first black in
the major leagues, breaking in with
the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
Stage impacts
singer’s life
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) —
Performing turned Naomi Judd’s
life around.
“When I was up on that stage,
all the sudden my life made sense,”
she told the Kentucky Woman ’94
conference Tuesday. “I could see
myself in you all.”
The six-time Grammy winner
spoke of her teen-age pregnancy,^
single motherhood and abusive re
lationships. She also discussed life
in the limelight, and of having a
savings account and insurance for
the first time at age 37.
Judd and daughter Wynonna
rocketed to stardom in the 1980s
as The Judds. She retired from
singing in 1991 after being diag
nosed with with chronic hepatitis.
She said the disease is now in com
plete remission.
Safer flavors
job with food
NEW YORK (AP) — Food is a
passion for “60 Minutes” corre
spondent Morley Safer, and he’s
not bashful about flavorings.
“You can never have enough
garlic. With enough garlic you can
eat The New York Times,” he said
in an interview in — what else?
— Wednesday’s food section of the
Times.
Safer gathers culinary memen
tos on his travels for the CBS pro
gram, everything from foie gras
from France to spices from Asia.
“1 love Vietnamese food, but it’s
too intricate for me to cook,” he
said. “The ingredients have to be
so incredibly fresh. ”
Scapino
Continued from Page 9
“I tended to think of him as a
chicken with its head cut off,” he said.
Geronte and Scapino are joined by
the other father, Argante (Charles
Russell), and the sons, Ottavio (Dean
Houser) and Leandro (Dylan Golden),
and their true loves Giancinta
(Michelle Eckley) and Zerbinetta
(Ashley Anne Hassler).
Scapino’s sidekick, Sylvestro
(Tony Heffner), is the comic icing on
the cake. His goofy expressions and
enthusiasm make his character a
charming addition to Scapino’s ploys.
“It’s like playing tragedy
with a rubber sword. ”
