Hittin’ the gym Rasehall nlaver looks back to move forward By Jeff Qrlesch Staff Reporter After a frustrating junior seasor Nebraska baseball player Jed Dalto is determined to prove himself in hi final season. Dalton, who hit a disappointin .261 with just two home runs last set son, said he returned to the trainin habits of his freshman season in a attempt to try to salvage his chance at playing professional baseball. “When I was in high school an as a freshman here, I lifted weighi all the time,” Dalton said. In his first season as a Cornhuske Dalton was named to the Baseba America Freshman All-America second team after hitting .358 wit seven home runs. But after a strong freshman set son, Dalton said he stopped liftin weights in the off-season. “I stopped lifting because I we afraid it was going to hurt me, Dalton said. “I was afraid I was g< ing to get tight and lose bat speed if lifted too much. I was scared that would hurt me in the draft if my bi speed was too slow.” But what hurt him most was lo: ing weight. By the end of last season, Dalton weight had dropped to 165 pound: which he said affected him bot physically and mentally on the fiel< “I felt tired, weak and fatigued b the end of the season, and I playe terrible,” Dalton said. “I had lost a of my confidence.” Because of his dismal seasor Dalton said he had all but given u on getting drafted. So he concentrate on getting stronger. I really felt good.” it At the start of fall baseball prac tice, Dalton said his bench press had increased 50 pounds since last spring, and he had gained 20 pounds, s But he said he planned to put »» heavy lifting on hold for the fall and h then hit the weights hard again until I- the beginning of spring practice, y “I think the biggest gain from all d my work has not been in just strength, II but in confidence,” Dalton said. “I feel so much better about myself and U my swing. I am ready to prove my P self again.” d Along with proving himself at the plate, Dalton also will get a chance g to prove himself at a new position.
