In doing so, she rejuvenates the entire house, casting off its aura of death. This transformation from death to life was brilliantly illustrated. As Archibald tells Mary, dead people remain ghosts as long as the living hold on to them. And so, in many scenes, the dead outnumbered the liv ing on stage. Mary’s parents, the Indian ser vants in their household who also died of cholera, and — most dramati cally — Lily roam the house. Some dramatic scenes were inter cut with scenes from the past, such as the night Lily and Archibald met and the night before Mary’s parents died. At the show’s end, the ghosts fi nally leave the stage. Mary has helped the house let go. Every scene of “The Secret Gar den” wa% entertaining. The show didn’t suffer from first-act drag, which seems to strike many musicals. Although adapted from a children’s book, the musical de lighted the largely adult audience. Most gripping was the love story of Archibald and his dead wife. Whenever Archibald was on stage, Lily (played by Rebecca’s mother, Carolyn Stevens) was usually there, too, watching him, singing to him, even dancing with him. Most of the songs were simple, but haunting (appropriate since many were sung by ghosts). The show’s only weakness was that it was sometimes hard to under stand. Many times, the characters lay ered different songs over one another. Although the result was dramatic and often beautiful, the content was lost. One character was difficult to un derstand because of the actor’s ac cent. Mary befriends Dickon (Jeremy Webb), who works on her uncle’s es tate. Webb’s voice was beautiful, but his version of the English accent was much different from that of Becca Daniels, who played his sister, Martha. He sometimes sounded like a cross between Ringo Starr and Crocodile Dundee, and much of his dialog was unclear. Every other element of the perfor mance — the acting, the singing, the sets and costumes — was delightful. The door has closed again and the company has moved on. But if you ever have a chance, treat yourself to a night in the garden. “Natural Born Killers: A Soundtrack” Produced by Trent Reznor Nothing Records Rating: A The deep, grainy voice of Leonard Cohen blankets the 75-minute expe rience that is the soundtrack to “Natu ral Bom Killers.” The album travels through differ ent music environments at speeds ranging from the froggy drawl of Bob Dylan to the speed metal tracks of Nine Inch Nails. Trent “NIN” Reznor has produced a first-of-its-kind soundtrack. The bizarre effects coupled with the vari ety of artists make this album the bas tard child of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and the Forrest Gump soundtrack. The variety is seemingly endless. The strong rap of Dr. Dre and the Dogg Pound intertwine with Patsy Cline, Lard and “A Night On Bare Mountain,” performed by the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. Oliver Stone personally asked Repior if he would be interested in doing the soundtrack for his new Film. Reznor captures the dark and dis turbing satires in sound that Stone has presented on the screen. Reznor has taken 27 of the 75 musical selections that were used in the film and meshed them into a ca cophony of sound effects, complete tunes and meshed songs. His track “Sex is Violent” is a twisted entanglement of Jane's Addiction's “Ted Just Admit It” and Diamanda Galas' “I Put a Spell on You." In addition to Nine Inch Nails' songs “A Warm Place” and an ex tended version of “Something I Can Never Have,” NIN recorded an en tirely new song, “Bum,” solely for the soundtrack. The soundtrack contains enough clips from the film that the listener can follow the warped path of the movie while taking another journey through a dream (nightmare?) of sounds, holding the cold hand of Trent Reznor.
