Stokes listed as doubtful
because of bruised thigh
LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA
All-American wide receiver J.J. Stokes
was listed as a doubtful performer
Thursday for the 13th-ranked Bruins'
game against No. 2 Nebraska on Sat
urday.
Stokes suffered a bruised left thigh
in UCLA’s season-opening 25-23 vic
tory over No. 15 Tennessee on Sept.
3. Stokes caught 82 passes for 1,181
yards and 17 touchdowns last season.
He didn’t play in the Bruins’ 17-10
win over Southern Methodist last Sat
urday.
“The swelling in his leg has gone
down, but he still does not have full
range of motion,” UCLA Sports In
formation Director Marc Dellins said
Thursday.
The Bruins leave Friday for Lin
coln. As of Thursday afternoon, Dellis
said, the final travel squad had not
been determined.
Stokes, a 6-foot-5l/2, 223-pound
senior, caught six passes for 84 yards
against Tennessee before coming out
of the game for good late in the third
quarter.

ESPN personality
calls NU ‘dominating’
ESPN’s Fowler says
UCLA Bruins could
test Cornhuskers
By Tin PMraon
Senior Editor
Nebraska may need UCLA to do it
a favor Saturday, Chris Fowler said.
Fowler, the host of ESPN’s “Col
lege Football GameDay,” said the
Cornhuskers needed a test, and UCLA
may be the team to give them the
challenge they need.
“I think we’ll find out how good
they are when they’re challenged,” he
said. “They looked so dominating in
their first two games.”
Fowler, along with Lee Corso and
Craig James, will be in Lincoln Friday
and Saturday. “College Football
GameDay” will be broadcast live from
outside Memorial Stadium Saturday
morning.
During the Huskers’ 31-0 rout of
West Virginia in the Kickoff Classic,
Fowler was on the sidelines. And he
was impressed by the Nebraska team
he saw.
“It could have been much worse
than 31 -0,” he said. “I felt they got a
little bored in that game. It looks so
easy for them.
“I’ve said all along that they have
the best chance to go undefeated into
the New Year’s Day bowl games.”
UCLA shouldn’t pose much of a
problem for the Huskers, Fowler said,
even though the Bruins are ranked No.
12 and No. 13 in the country.
“A challenge will bring out the best
in (Nebraska),” he said. “I think UCLA
will have a very difficult time with the
atmosphere there.
“Nebraska’s not going to be think
ing about the injured UCLA team;
they’re going to remember the team
they beat by a point last year.”
With UCLA wide receiver and
Heisman candidate J.J. Stokes ham
pered by injuries, Fowler said the Bru
ins might not be able to give the Husk
ers the test they need.

“After seeing Stokes limping out
of practice (Tuesday), I don’t think
they can stay with Nebraska.”
Especially ifNebraska quarterback
Tommie Frazier and hisoffensive line
are clicking, he said.
“I love what they do,” Fowler said.
“When they get a team on the ropes,
they start running their plays more
rapidly.
“And how can you not like Tommie
Frazier? On basic plays he’s beating
defenses with his athletic ability. It’s a
testament to how good he is.”
But Fowler said Frazier needed to
stay healthy for the Huskers to make a
run at the national championship.
“He’s one of the leading Heisman
candidates right now,” he said. “But
you hold your breath every time he
hits the carpet.”
The ESPN crew will arrive in Lin
coln early Friday to set up its live
hook-up from the stadium. Parts of
Friday’s pep rally and HuskerVision
KickoffCelebration will be broadcast
by ESPN.
Fowler said ESPN was trying to
give its viewers a realistic glance at
college football.
“We tried this last year, and it was
a big success,” he said. “They wanted
to do it quite often this year.
“With all the stuff going on in Lin
coln, with the pep rally and the new
video screen, that’s really the way we
like to do it. We want to capture the
atmosphere and show people what it’s
like to be in Lincoln on game day.”
