Mud volleyball lets students get down, dirty By Todd Walkenhorst Staff Reporter It was dirty. It was something different. And it was a good study break. Those were the opinions of the more than 300 people who partici pated in the intramural mud volleyball tournament last weekend. The Campus Recreation Center sponsored the event, which fielded 62 teams. The teams were divided into men's, women’s and coed divisions. Campus Recreation staff assistant David Emanuel said there usually was a big turnout for the mud volleyball tournament. “A lot of people come out for this tournament because it is one of the first intramural events of the year." Emanuel said. “Il'salsokindoffun to come out andjumparound inthc mud." Freshman Kcri Eihusen said many people were enthusiastic about com peting in the intramural tournament. “Almost every single person on our floor wanted to play." she said. “We signed up three teams." Sophomore Jennifer Liverto said that it was something unusual to do and that the tournament was not as compctitiveasothcrintramural events. “It was really different and a lot of fun.” she said. “You didn't have to be real competitive to participate." Emanuel said some people were hesitant to enter the mud pits, but once they began playing, they had a lot of fun. i — Jay Calderon/DN The intramural mud volleyball tournament last weekend gave many students a chance to roll around in the mud. “At first they arc real tentative to get in the mud.'' he said. “But they stay in when they a re done with their games until we make them leave.” Freshman Justin Jarosc had advice for anybody considering entering the tournament. “Wearyour dirtiest, oldest clothes, because they will never get clean." Jarosc said. i Eihuscn and Jarosc both said they would love to compete in the tourna ment again next year. “What could be more fun then roll ing around in the mud?" The Huskers will practice for the next four weeks, and Sanders said they planned on playing Red/White inlrasquad games throughout the fall season. Sanders said all practices would be open to the public. “We encourage all the fans and especially the students to come out and watch our practices and intrasquad games."
