Fugitive’s bail set at $500,000
By Angie Schendt _
Staff Reporter
Bail for an Arkansas county jail
escapee who was apprehended in Lin
coln was set at $500,000 on Thursday.
Chad Beers is charged with attempt
ed robbery, stealing property and use of
a deadly weapon. He also is charged
with terrorizing and causing bodily harm
to a person and fleeing arrest with a
motor vehicle.
Beers, who escaped from an Arkan
r
sas county jail, was arrested Wednesday
after a chase with Lincoln police down
P Street the wrong way. Beers, who was
driving a stolen truck from Lawrence,
Kan., hit a University of Nebraska mail
van.
Police suspect Beers tried to rob a
convenience store in Bennet early
Wednesday. Police heard the truck was
headed for Lincoln, then spotted Beers
and began a chase.
About 9:30 a.m.. Beers hit a univer
sily van traveling south on 11 th Street.
He then began running from the scene
of the accident and threatened an off
duty police ofTicer with a screwdriver,
police said.
The escapee eventually was cornered
in a building at 13th and O streets and
detained by the officer and a construc
tion worker.
Beers did not enter a plea to the
charges Thursday, because he didn’t
have an attorney.
