Soccer team wins respect
despite a loss to Creighton

After a 3-1 loss to Creighton on Tuesday, the
Nebraska soccer team has the potential to pull off
some upsets in its inaugural season, Bluejay coach
Cathy Klein said.
And Comhusker coach John Walker is hoping
thatastringofwinswillbcginthis weekend, when
his team travels to Missoula, Mont., to face
Montana tonight and Arizona on Sunday.
But Walker would like to have more time to
prepare for his team’s first road trip. The Huskers
opened their first season on Tuesday, losing to
Creighton before more than 400 fans at Whittier
Field.
Walker said Creighton was a potential Top 20
team with a lot of experienced players who knew
how to capitalize on mistakes. Some crucial
mistakes his team made were the difference, he
said.
And he’s hoping those mistakes don’t happen
this weekend.
But Klein said the Huskers could pose prob
lems for their future opponents.
Klein, who is in her first year at Creighton, had
nothing but good things to say about the new
Nebraska program.
She said Nebraska looked “awesome” the
first 10 minutes of the game and caused her team
to make a lot of adjustments to handle the Huskcr
attack.

preseason No. 12 Wisconsin on Saturday, and
Klein said her players were under a lot of pressure,
which may have caused them to be a little tight at
the beginning. But she gave the Huskcr players
credit for being ready to play.
The Nebraska players were physical, Klein
said, and they had a size advantage over her team.
She also said she could tell the Huskers were not
intimidated by her Creighton team.
Klein said she thought her team beat “a good
team” that would score a lot of goals and cause
other teams to take notice of it.
“They’re gonna surprise a lot of people,” she
said.
Walker said that while he wasn’t pleased with
the result, he was pleased with the players’ elTort.
Before the game. Walker said he was con
cerned about his team’s abil ity to keep up with the
physical-style game for a full 90 minutes, but his
players proved they were up to the task.
“Overall the girls battled hard,” he said.
Football tickets
can be picked up
starting Monday

Students may pick up season football
tickets next week before the Cornhuskers’
home opener against UCLA on Sept. 17.
Tickets can be picked up at the South
Stadium Ticket Office starting Monday.
Also, student football migration tickets
will go on sale on Sept 20. Tickets will be
sold for three days, with one-third of the
allotment being sold each day. The migra
tion game will be the Oct. 15 game at
Kansas State in Manhattan.
Student basketball tickets will goon sale
on Sept. 19. Applications for tickets may be
picked up Monday. Policy also has been
changed regarding the validation of stu
dent basketball tickets. In the past, students
with val idated tickets were able to sit on the
floor. Starting this year, all with validated
tickets will be directed to upper bench
seating.

After a Texas Tech punt, it was Phillips’ turn
to shine. The sophomore from West Covina,
Calif., scored on a 56-yard run, the longest of his
career, to give the Huskers a 28-9 lead.
Frazier added a 35-yard touchdown pass to
tight end Eric Alford early in the fourth quarter
to put the game away at 35-9. Both teams added
touchdowns in the final seven minutes to close
out the scoring.
Phillips said the three backs complimented
each other well.
“They were playing the option, and that
opened things up for Tommie,” Phillips said.
“Then they started to play Tommie, and that
opened up the middle for Cory.”
Osborne said Nebraska’s lowest point of the
season so far came with just over four minutes
left in the third quarter.
Starting free safety Mike Minter, the fastest
Lawton, Okla., is out for the season.
Osborne said the Huskers, who ran for 524
yards on the night and posted 612 total yards of
offense, have plenty of room to improve.
“We played good football ” he said. “We
probably didn’t play inspired football. We
weren’t quite as sharp as we should have been.
“We arc very mortal, but we have got a long
ways to go.”
