Volleyball background pays off ■ By Mitch Sherman Senior Reporter Bill ic Winsett has been around vol leyball her entire life. Growing up in a home that pro duced four Division I volleyball play ers, the 5-foot-11 outside hitter on the Nebraska volleyball team didn’t face a difficultdccision when choosing which sport to play. But instead of focusing solely on volleyball, the junior from Boonvillc, Ind., chose to play three sports. She earned 12 letters in four years at Boonvillc High School, participat- * ing in basketball, volleyball and track. “I was six years behind the sister closest to me,” Winsctt said. “They didn’t want to play with me because I was bad, and it was no fun for them. But they showed me how exciting it could be and how nothing could re place that feeling.” Winsett said she would like to fol low in her sister Barbara’s footsteps by making a trip to the Final Four. “I think that is definitely a possibil ity,” she said. Winsett is one of two junior starters returning from a team that finished last season with a 25-6 record. Another junior, Christy Johnson, redshirted a year ago, but carried just as much experience as any reluming starter, Winsett said. Along with Johnson, senior Kelly Aspegrcn and sophomore Jen McFadden, Winsett was one of four Huskers who played on the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival team this past sum mer. Combined with her experience on the Nebraska squad a year ago, W insett said the Olympic Festival helped make her a more confident player. “The experience let me feel I could be the one the team could look for if they need a point,” she said. Comhuskcr coach Terry Pettit said he noticed the difference. “I think Billie has become a great player,” Pettit said. “She has a lot more confidence. £h£, has alwpy§ been a Travis Heying/DN Nebraska outside hitter Billie Winsett, a junior from Boonville, Ind., prepares to serve during practice. Winsett is entering her third year at Nebraska and second as a starter. great passer. Her attack and blocking arc significantly better. I think she has gone up another level.” Despite Nebraska’srecord last year, Winsctt said the Huskers were disap pointed with the way the season ended. After an 11-0 start, the Huskers fin ished second to Colorado in the Big Eight and lost to Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA tourna ment. “It’s kind of a different viewpoint coming from second and ending up on a bad note in the NCAA tournament,” Winsctt said. “We are not necessarily looking to be great at the beginning of the season, but being great at the end of the season.” Rest Continued from Page 9 raring for West Virginia, so it gives us i little extra time for both Texas Tech md UCLA right now.
