Track athletes prepare, repair
By Trevor Parks
Staff Reporter”
The Nebraska men’s and women’s
track and field teams appear to be in
good shape as they prepare for the
upcoming season, Coach Gary Pepin
said.
Several Comhuskers competed over
the summer, giving them valuable
experience against some of the top
competition in the world.
On the women’s side, sophomore
Angee Henry won the long jump at the
national Junior Olympics.
Sophomore sprinter Mark Graham
competed at the Commonwealth
Games. However, Graham hurt his
hamstring, Pepin said, and that ham
pered his performance.
Pepin said the return of 1993 Big
Eight long jump champion Robert
Thomas would be a major factor in an
area with which the Huskcrs had prob
lems last season.
“I think Robert’s return will help
our long jump,” Pepin said. “Hopeful
ly he can do a good job in the sprints,
too.”

While some Huskers prepared for
next season, others had off-season sur
gery to repair for the upcoming season.
Pepin said All-American senior
sprinter Shanclle Porter had surgery
on her injured foot, which kept her out
of the outdoor season. Porter will be
able to run once the outdoor season
rolls around, Pepin said.
Porter has used up her eligibility for
the indoor season.
Junior sprinter Kathy Travis also
had surgery on her foot.
Pepin said Travis had made good
progress, and he was optimistic that
she would be ready for the indoor
season.
Also on the women’s side, senior
thrower Dagmar Pcsakova had minor
surgery on her wrist.
“Virtually everybody is in good
health, and there arc no major wor
ries,” Pepin said.
Pepin said he had been busy this
summer recruiting, because the Husk
ers had picked up only four recruits
after last year’s indoor season.
As September begins, Nebraska
almost has completed recruiting for
the season, and Pepin said things had
gone well.
“We’ve done a good job of getting
a good group of athletes,” Pepin said
Pepin said the men’s team had few
scholarships to offer, but the athletes
he recruited should be able to contrib
ute right away.
On the women’s team, which was
the No. 1 dual meet team last year,
Pepin said he still was looking for
more players.
“We’re hoping at the end of the
semester the wheelbarrow will fill up,”
he said.
Although recruiting has gone well,
Pepin still isn’t sure how well every
one will do.
“You never know what you have
until a couple of meets into the sea
son,” he said.

NU linebacker Worthy to be off fall roster
From Staff Reports
Nebraska coach Tom Osborne said
linebacker Ramone Worthy, who was
a redshirt freshman last year, would
not be on the Comhuskers’ roster this
season and would probably transfer.
“He’s not currently on the squad,”
Osborne said. “There were some per
sonal problems, and I don’t know if
he’s going to continue here or not. My
understanding is that he asked for a
transfer or release. We would be will
ing to put him back on scholarship at
semester if he wants to stay.”
Osborne said that because Worthy
was taken off scholarship, he with
drew from his fall classes.
NOTE:
Nebraska got its first taste of hitting
since its victory over West Virginia
with a two-hour practice Wednesday
in full pads.
The Huskers ran live pass protec
tion and five live plays from the goal
line.
Fourth-string quarterback Monte
Christo sprained his thumb, and
Osborne said Christo was question
able for today’s practice.
“We had a fairly heavy practice
today, and it went all right,” Osborne
said. “Nobody hurt in a major way.
Monte Christo sprained his thumb a
little bit. I hope he's able to throw
(Thursday), but I question whether he
can or not.”
