Valentino’s to warm Husker fans’ bellies Departure of Runza opens the oven door for pizza at NU games By Josh Wimmer Staff Reporter Two of America’s favorite pastimes will meet in Memorial Stadium this fall: pizza and football. This year, Valentino’s will be serving giant slices of pizza during football games. The main reason for the decision was the departure of Runza restaurants from serving concessions at the games. Valentino’s was offered a chance at Runza’s spot because of its notable local popularity and because it has worked with the athletic depart ment serving pizza at the Bob Dcvancy Sports Center for the past two years, said Gary Fourakcr, assistant athletic director for business affairs. “We’ve worked with Valentino’s at Dcvancy before,” Fouraker said. “We talked to Pizza Hut and Valentino’s. Valentino’s was the First to commit.” Valentino’s and the athletic department will be working together to market the pizza, Fouraker said. The fans at the late-autumn games might be cold, but the pizza won’t be, said Tony Messinco, president ofValcntino’s Inc. Newovens arc being installed in the stadium to guarantee warmth and freshness, he said. Mcssinco said finding a way to make sure the pizzas were fresh was challenging. “It was felt that ovens needed to be installed in the stadium as opposed to mak ing them at another location and transporting them," Messineo said. “In addition to helping us get the pizzas to the fans more quickly, the ovens will ensure that the pizzas meet our standards of quality and fresh ness,” he said. The pizza will be served at the first home game agaiast UCLA on Sept. 17. It will be sold in giant slices for $2 a piece, Valentino’s manager Tom Harrison said. A substantial portion of the pizza sales will support the athletic department. Runza decided to stop selling concessions in the stadium because of the athletic department’s request for an annual $30,000 contribution from each vendor. Renee Ford, head of public rclatioas for Runza. said Runza’s yearly budget simply was not great enough to allow for such a contribution. However, she said, Runza will be selling con cessions at strategic locations outside of the stadi um, including tne Big Red Shop and in the parking lot of Tires Inc. “(The decision to depart) was a mutual deci sion between ourselves and the university,” she Beginning Sept. 1 7 at the UCLA game - Valentino's pizza giant slices - $2 ON Graphic said. “We wish Valentino’s the best of luck.” University cafeterias have started offering Valentino’s pizza as well this year. That decision, according to Fouraker, was unrelated. Valentino’s Inc. was first opened in Lincoln more than 35 years ago and has corporate-owned stores in Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island. Fundsneeded for memorial for Harms By Catherine Blalock Staff Reporter ~ Fund-raisers for ihc Candice Harms memorial have collected $3,000 so far. Their goal is$15,000. Kim Todd, campus landscape architect, said that although the fund was $12,000 shori, the drive’s organizers hoped to start construction in the summer of 1995. That is a reasonable starting date, she said, if the money is raised this school year. Andrew Loudon, president of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska, said he hoped the money would be raised by November or December. Loudon first proposed building the memorial to Harms, a University of Nebraska Lincoln freshman who was murdered two years ago. — 44 I truly believe the UNL students will be generous. —Loudon ASUN president -?? “I truly believe the UNL students will be generous,” Loudon said. Shelly Byrne, who directs fund-raising for the Student Foundation Committee, saidonly $3,000 had been raised because few students and faculty members were at the university during the sum mer. Todd said the memorial, which would take three months to build, would be a seating wall. Todd has been working with the Harms family and the Student Foundation Committee. She said she chose a wall as the memorial because people could gather by it. That is fitting, Todd said, because Harms was a people person. “The more seating, the more people can gath er,” she said. The memorial will be built in the northwest comer of North Plaza Park, located north of the City Union. It will be about 35 feet long and 24 to 30 inches high. “Mr. and Mrs. Harms want some typcofdcsign on top,” Byrne said. Byrne said her committee was planning a kickoff to announce the fund-raising campaign for the memorial. The fund-raising committee already has had a phone drive, which included calling graduating seniors. It also sent out letters to college dcaas, to administrators and to students in residence halls and greek organizations. “We’ll probably do another phone drive.” Byrne said. Anyone who would like to donate to the drive can contact the University Foundation or the ASUN office. Student organizations interested in helping with the fund-raising can contact the ASUN office.
