Jeff Haller/DN Dicky Barrett, lead singer of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, rocks the crowd at The Hurricane Sunday night. Mighty moshin’ shakes the ‘Cane By Joel Strauch Senior Reporter Plaid is back and with it comes The Mighty Mighty Bosstoncs. Hailing from Boston, Mass., The Bosstones arc acrowd-interactive band that plays an intense combination of heavy metal and danceablc ska. The Bosstones nine-member band shook the eye of The Hurricane Sun day night. The brass sounds of the two saxes and trombone meshed well with the heavier riffs from the guitars and slammin’ percussion. The crowd was almost as involved as The Bosstones backup vocalist and dancer Ben Carr. Carr was continually throwing himself into the sea of wait ing hands and crowd-surfing back to the stage between bouts of his knees up dancing that clashed well with the i band’s ska sounds. Preceded by Kansas City’s Weaker Youth Ensemble, a hip-hop/thrash band marked by its accordion-1 ike keyboard ing, and The Bosstoncs’ own opener Black Train Jack, the show was ofT car’ to an insane start. ce The Bosstoncs took the stage, after a cavalry charge and a somber entrance, the crowd went insane. Stage diving and crowd-surfing were the audiences members’ ways of showing their cult-like devotion. The mosh pit that filled the first 50 feet of the audi ence swelled and swayed and didn’t break until after the band’s third en core. The band played songs off of their debut album “Devil’s Night Out” and their latest LP, “More Noise and Other Disturbances.” Lead singer Dicky Barrett’s audience interaction set the tone for members of the crowd singing segments of songs and dancing on the stage. The Bosstoncs have a reputation for trusting their audiences and appar ently it is well-founded. “There was lots of stage-diving by the crowd and the band and for some reason, no one got hurt,” Bubba said. “It was a very safe performance.” Even though the Hurricane was shaking with all the people, Bubba, the sound man for The Hurricane, was a little disappointed with the turnout. “We were hoping for more,” he said. “But it was pretty good for a younger crowd setting.” “The Bosstoncs contract required an all-ages show, so we had to make do with sell ing pop and herbal tea,” Bubba said. “But it was a great performance; they had a really energetic set.” FOR SALE 000s 02 Appliances 05 Bicycles 10 Books 13 Clothing 16 CompuFers 20 Furniture 30 Jewelry 40 Garage Sales 10 Mlsc. Actor Marlon Brando says he’s always considered his life a“private affair,” but he’s penned “Brando: Songs My Mother Taught Me” so his children can separate the truth from the myths about him. The book is being published by Random House, Harold Evans, pres ident and publisher of the Random House Adult Trade Group, said Monday. It was written in collabo ration with Robert Lindsey, a former New York Times correspondent who also aided President Reagan on his autobiography. “Brando” is due in stores Sept. 7. “Except for moral and political issues that aroused in me a desire to speak out, I have done my utmost throughout my life, for the sake of my children and myself, to remain silent,” Brando said in a statement. “But now, in my seventieth year, I have dec ided to tell the story of my 1 ife as best I can, so that my children can separate the truth from the myths that others have created about me, as myths arc created by everyone swept up in the turbulent and dis torting maelstrom of celebrity in our time.” Brando has won Academy Awards as Terry Malloy in 1954’s “On the Waterfront” and as the title role in 1972’s “The Godfather.” tomm SOUTH 3219 S. 13th 423-0048 NORTH 2301 N. 33rd 464-3141 "7^ fame Spccutuu • Over 15,000 Movies and Games Available • • Rental video game sale for all systems start at $9.98 • GENESIS • TURBO GRAFX • GAMEBOY • GAME GEAR .
