Marion Ellis, a graduate student in biology, helps look after more than 300,000 bees
located on East Campus.
Worker bees surround the queen, constantly feeding her and tending to her needs.
Smoke is used to dissipate the bees alarm pheromones,
allowing entrance to the inner combs.
Using essential oils (which are produced by plants to defend against tissue-eating
insects), Ellis searches for a way to kill mites located within bees tracheas.
Ellis collects bees to take back to the lab for research.
