Wed.. As a character study and drama, “Blown Away” could have done rath er well considering the starpower in volved (JefT Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, Lloyd Bridges and Forest Whitaker), but the movie gets lost in a storyline that tries to be both sus penseful and dramatic at the same time. Unfortunately, between the indeci si vencss that director Stephen Hopk i ns (“Judgment Night”) had with what direction to take “Blown Away,” and the sometimes-heavy I rish accents that abound throughout the film, it ends up being quite the mish-mash of crud. JefT Bridges, one of Hollywood's most underrated actors, turns in a line performance as Jimmy Dove, a man with bags and bags pf guilt hanging over his head because of a terrorist bombing that he was a part ol belore he left Ireland. He has since come to America, made a new identity for himself, and is one of the best bomb squad members on the entire force. Unfortunately, Dove’s past comes back to haunt him when his former comrade Ryan Gacrily (Tommy Lee Jones) escapes from prison. He can “make bombs out of Bisquick,” and comes to America to make Dove payJ for his lengthy incarceration, even i f it means killing Dove’s wife (Su/.y Amis), his mentor Max (Bridges Sr.), or his brash new partner on the bomb squad (Whitaker). The film is loo hit-and-miss in either the adrenaline category or the drama category to recommend it; it tries to do loo much. The gem of this movie is Tommy Lee Jones. The entire audience knows that his character is insane, demented, and just isn’t a very nice person. How ever, he is positively hypnotic when ever he is on the screen, whether he is making a bomb with a coffee-maker or dancing to the tunes of U2. Jones is also apparently attempting to set a record for the number of film appear ances in a one-year period of lime. “The Client’’ will be opening up be fore the month is out, with “Cobb” and "Natural Bom Killers’’ following close behind. For “Blown Away,” wait for the video or the cheap scats. —Gerry Beltz 17th & 'N' St. No Appointments Necessary 476-9466 $6 Off Oil Changes Service NOW FOR $1 O 95 ONLY 1 O (rcg. $24.95) • Wc change oil, oil filter up to S quarts. *Wc lubricate the chassis. •Wc check anil Till: Automatic Ixansinision fluid inly, brake fluid, battery fluid, power steering fluit and washer fluid. •We check anti freeze, air niter, wiper blades, tire iressure, vacuum interior, and wash your windows Best Service in Just 10 Minutes Most brands available Expires 8-31-94 Mon-Fri 8-6 Sat 8-4 I-.
