    NU’s track season ends
By Derek Samson
Staff Reporter __
Nebraska ended its track and
field season last weekend at the
NCAA Outdoor Track and Field
Championships in Boise, Idaho,
with the Huskcr women just miss
ing their prescason goal.
The Nebraska women finished
16th, while the men checked in tied
for 48th with Texas A&M. LSU
won the women’s competition and
Arkansas took the men’s title.
Coach Gary Pepin said the wom
en were close to meeting expecta
tions set before the season started.
“Our goal from the beginning of
the season was to finish in the top
10 in both the men’s and women’s
(competition),” he said. “On the
women’s side, it was a very realis
tic goal. We were hit by some inju
ries and then had some subpar per
formances there (at Boise).
The brightest spot for the Husk
ers was Nicola Martial, who won the
triple jump with a jump of 44-11 3/4.
Pepin said Martial’s jump was
the highlight of the season.
“It is definitely the best colic
giatcjumpofthcycar, Pepin said.
“It was one of the best triple jumps
ever in the women’s NCAA (Cham
pionships). The good thing is she’s
only a sophomore.”
Martial was the first Husker
woman to win an individual out
door title since Ximena Rcstripo
won the 400-meter dash n 1991.
Sophomore Paulette Mitchell
placed fifth in the shot put with a
throw of 53-6 1/2 and freshman
Angec Henry finished eighth in the
long jump by leaping 20-8 1/2.
Andy Meyer was the only Husk
er to finish in the top six for the
men’s team when his throw of 188
9 was good enough for a fourth
place finish in the discus. It was the
second straight year that the senior
placed fourth at the outdoor meet.
“We got a real strong perfor
mance out of Andy,” Pepin said.
“He had been sick and injured all
spring and it seemed like he was
just starting to get going again. We
wished he could have went without
the injury and sickness, then he
would’ve been at this level in the
beginning and could have kept
improving.”

Husker hitting duo honored again
By Derek Samson
Staff Reporter ..;___
Nebraska baseball players Derek
Dukart and Darin Erstad were again
honored by being named to the All
Midwest Regional Team.
Dukart, a senior third basemen,
was selected to the first team, while
Erstad, a sophomore outfielder, was
chosen for the second team.
Coach John Sanders said the duo
provided leadership both on and off
the field. ' ' -
“They were very effective for us all
season,” Sanders said. “They were
players that were first good students.
They put up good numbers both in the
classroom and on the field. They’re
good examples of what leaders should
be.”
The tandem of Dukart and Erstad
provided the 32-28 Huskers with most
of their offensive firepower.
Dukart and Erstad led the Huskers
in hitting, with respective batting av
erages of .361 and .317 and RBI totals
of 55 and 52.
“I’d say they’re right up there with
one of the best (duos) in the Big Eight,”
Sanders said. “The statistics bear that
out. Now they’re getting the honors
for it and I think it is well-deserved.”
Sanders said the pair helped the
Dukart
Huskcrs get past some of the rougher
spots during the season.
“They provided this team with sta
bility,” he said. “We were able to
count on them in tough times. They’re
both very consistent. Anytime you can
get two or three players who are con
sistent, they’ll help you through those
tough times.”
Both players were named First
Team All-Big Eight and were also
chosen earlier in the season to the
Erstad
Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic All-Tour
nament Team in Fresno, Ca.
Sanders said he was now search
ing for a replacement for Dukart, the
third basemen from Milwaukie, Ore.
“He will be missed considerably,
but it’s not like we’re going to shut
down the program,” he said. “He was
someone that showed he can get it
done from all aspects. We have some
pretty good prospects now and 1 hope
they can do the job.”
