Lincoln’s diverse theater collection has wide appeal By Gerry Beltz Staff Reporter It’s one of the world’s favorite pas imes, a billion-dollar business, and las something to appeal to everyone. It’s the movies. From the early days of Charlie Chaplin’s silent films to Steven Spielberg’s lawyer-eating dinosaurs, movies have always been close to the learts of people everywhere. Lincoln is no different. There are 10 theaters throughout the city, com Ra total of 30 screens, and all je of these theaters are located in downtown Lincoln. The intersection of 13th and P streets is a busy place for movies; there are three theaters here. On the north west comer stands the Cinema 1 & 2, a theater with the best seats in the city. Buy your ticket, head up to the upper level, and enjoy. --- mi Mil. It is extremely mediocre; nothing that good or bad about it, but it’s not worth avoiding. To the south (the southeast comer) is the Stuart Theatre, one of Lincoln’s oldest movie theaters and certainly the largest. Its size almost guarantees a great flick to be showing, but the sound system could use an upgrade. Nothing there you like? Then stroll a block to the west for two more the aters. On the southwest corner of 12th and P streets is The Lincoln 3 Theatre, which features great popcorn and is the only theater in Lincoln to offer Clearly Canadian at the snack bar. • Across P Street, on the northwest corner, is the Plaza 4 Theatres. Un comfortable seats and hit-and-miss popcorn, but frequently shows films that don’t show elsewhere in Lincoln. Roll the dice on this one. Also located near downtown, on the UNL city campus, is the Mary Riempa Ross Film Theater, which shows films that don’t make it to the mainstream theaters, such as foreign films and movies from independent filmmakers. New films arrive every jne to two weeks. This is another theater almost guaranteed to show a high quality movie (no popcorn though). Also downtown is the Star Ship 9 (located on 13th and Q streets). You can’t miss it, it’s Lincoln’s only pink theater. The Star Ship 9 is a discount house, which means it shows movies which have already played in the other theaters. All seats for all shows are $1.50, which makes it a perfect the ater for the “economically challenged” student. Also, the Star Ship 9 box office opens at 1:45 in the afternoon Monday through Friday, thus making ft an ideal choice for an afternoon diversion. If you feel like driving a little bit, the Edgewood 3 Theatre (56th Street and Highway 2) features a terrific sound system, ample parking, and decentpopcom. Plus, you cangoshop ping afterwards (or before) in the Edgewood Shopping Center. Also, there is the East Park 3 The atre (66th and O streets, in East Park Mall). Again, shopping can be done before or after the movie, and parking isn’t too much of a hassle. However, the popcorn isn’t that great, and the theaters are frequently packed with jabbering teenagers or screaming chil dren left there by parents who have gone shopping. Go here for the late show or if you are REALLY patient around kids. Last, and certainly not least, is the Joyo Theater, located at 61st Street and Havelock Avenue, a theater that many patrons say “is just like the theater back home.” It is the only theater in Lincoln not owned by the Douglas Theater Company, and also shows second-run films. The owners/ operators of the Joyo, Don and Edy Montgomery, have anew movie virtu ally every Friday (almost always a family film), and maintain a snack bar with a wider choice of selections than any other theater in Lincoln. It’s def initely worth the drive. All theaters have a 24-hour record ed message that plays showtimes and admission prices, and three theaters (The Lincoln 3 Theatre, the Plaza 4 Theatres, and the Star Ship 9) have computerized ticket sales which en able moviegoers to purchase their tick ets at anytime during open box office hours.
