A solution, Jacobsen said, is to
reduce the number of upper and
midlevel administrators.
“(State government) is top
heavy,” he said. “We have too much
administration.”
When the candidates were asked
if they would support raising taxes
to support their crime reform plans,
they said Nebraskans would be will
ing to pay for them.
Jacobsen said his violent crime
package would separate violent and
nonviolent offenders, create work
release programs for prisoners and
keep violent offenders offthe streets.
Knobel said Nebraskans were
upset because the death penalty was
not being carried out.
DcCamp said it was wrong for
government on the one hand to say
u was winning the war on crime
and on the other hand to ask for
more money.
DcCamp proposed putting
criminals to work and make them
“pay their own way.”

Nixon

Watergate would always be a part of
Nixon’s legacy.
“I would say an adequate perfor
mance as president has been marred
by Watergate,” he said.
But Sittigsaid the passage of time
had somewhat dimmed the memory
of Watergate and had allowed Nixon
also to be evaluated on his achieve
ments in office. He said in addition to
Nixon’s foreign policy successes, the
37th president had accomplishments
in domestic policy.
"He was willing to attack age-old
problems in a different sort of way
that we wouldn’t associate with some
one from the Republican Party,” he
said. 1 .
Nixon was responsible for the mis
takes he made in handling Watergate,
Sittig said.
“I don’t accept that his opponents
seized on Watergate to further deni
grate Nixon,” he said. “He brought it
onjjimsclf. That was a manageable
type of error that could have been
taken care of.” - '
Nixon s foreign policy successes
qual ify h i m to be ranked h ighly among
presidents, Sittig said. But he said
Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald
Reagan were Republicans that would
more likely stand out in history be
cause they didn’t have the stain of
Watergate on their records.
“I’dsay the way his administration
came to an end sobered up his advo
cates and provided ammunition to his
critics,” Sittig said. “Taken together,
it humiliated a career that had been
somewhere between good and pretty
good up till that point.”
