ASUN votes to oppose
new engineering college
Separate school
would be costly,
senator says
From Staff Reports
ASUN passed a bill Wednesday to
oppose the proposal for an indepen
dent engineering college in Omaha.
Andrew Loudon, president of the
Association ofStudcnts ofthc Uni ver
sity of Nebraska,
said although the
NU Board of Re
gents wouldn’t
make a decision
until the December
meeting, it was im
portant to begin
campaigning against the proposal
now.
“We’re not going to let the engi
neering students down without a
fight,” Loudon said.
Dave M illigan, speaker of the sen
ate and an engineering senator, said
he had not talked to one engineering
student who was in favor of the inde
pendent college.
Mill igan said students would favor
more engineering classes at the Uni
versity of Nebraska at Omaha, but
Nebraska couldn’t afford a separate
college.
“What they’re considering doing
is something that the consultant’s re
port has said a state like Nebraska
couldn’t afford.
“With budget cuts already, it’s just
not feasible to have two colleges,”
Milligan said.
Inotheraction, ASUN passeda bill
regarding the future of academic tu
toring because of the elimination of
the Academic Success Center.
ASUN will be in charge ofcompil
ing a list of tutors’ names and tele
phone numbers that will be available
at the Student Information Services
office.
Loudon said ASUN also would do
a comprehensive study of what ser
vices were provided by the Academic
Success Center and try to find organi
zations to help fill the void.
Lawyer: Profs need more time
From Staff Reports
A lawyer for four UNL assistant
professors said they shouldbe allowed
an additional two years to achieve
tenure, according to a brief filed
Wednesday with a U.S. district judge.
The four College of Engineering
and Technology professors filed the
lawsuit against the university last
month, saying they had been unfairly
passed over for tenure.
The professors, L. Russell Alberts,
Gautam Balra. Michael Rcsch and
Nisar Shaikh, complained to the Fac
ulty Grievance Committee last No
vember.
The committee ruled that the pro
fessors should be allowed two years to
prove they warran ted tenure, but Chan
cellor Graham Spanier overruled the
decision.
The brief. Tiled Wednesday by at
torneys for the professors, said the
university refused to grant the profes
sors tenure because they failed to fol
low published rules for tenure. Yet,
the brief said, the university argued it
wasn’t required to inform the profes
sors about procedures to attain it.
“Certainly, that is an interesting
dichotomy,” the brief said.
The br ief said the professors had a
property right in knowing the stan
dards, guidelines and evaluations
needed for tenure.
The universitydid not inform them
ofany criteria until several years after
t heir employment began, the brief sa id.
Thom Cope* attorney for the pro
fessors, said the university must re
spond to his brief by April 26.
