Blues band to ‘whip’ up a storm By Jill O’Brien Staff Reporter When wisecrackin’, whip-toting Molly Elswick (Miss Molly to fans) and her band show up at the Zoo Bar Thursday and Friday n igh ts, the crowd is sure to snap to attention. M iss Molly can brand ish a bul 1 whip as well as belt out the blues. “I don’t use my whip too much any more, but when I get to new places I like to snap it around the boys’heads,” site said. Her whip, coupled with her extro verted personality, has come close to getting her and the rest of the band into serious trouble, she said, recall ing the time she snapped her whip over the head of former President George Bush. “The band was playing at a debu tante party,” she said. “That was when George was vice president. I heard maybe he was going to come. 1 didn’t really care, but I looked up and there he was, so I cracked my whip — and it sounded like a gun.” Bush was thrown to the floor and buried by his bodyguards. Secret ser vice agents drew guns, the crowd ducked heads, and the band members put their hands up in the air, bul Miss Molly was still clutching her whip. “There was a Secret Service man with a gun in my face, and I’m laugh ing like a hyena going, ‘Hey, George ... touchy, touchy.’ The whole inci dent lasted about 50 seconds,” she said. “It was a hoot.” When Miss Molly isn’t cracking her whip, she’s singing and writing blues songs. Her band, appropriately named the Whips, performs “a blues influenced, rock-tinged thang,” she said. But her self-titled debut album also contains a lot of country instru mentation. Her second album, “In the Gar den,” scheduled for a summer release, is completely different in instrumen tation nothing fancy, she said. “We’re just a bare-boncs road band,' not a lot of frills,” she said. “It’s the only way to do it.” The Whips have backed her sing ing for four years, she said, but the current incarnation has been together only a few weeks, she said. The current Whip lineup includes drummer Eric Tucker; bass player Gene Kurtz, who recorded with Booker T.and Edgar Winter; and keyboardist Lanier Grcig, who has previously re- _ corded with ZZ Top. Keith Blair, lightning-lead guitar ist, has several slick movesofhis own. Miss Molly said. “He’s like a total swamp fox out of Louisiana. He’s a young man who plays guitarlike it was his last day on earth,” she said. Miss Molly, 30, said there was never any doubt she was going to be a singer. At the age of9, she sang Palsy Cline songs to muddy rice farmers in her mother’s Louisiana bar. -1<-— I don’t use my whip too much any more, but when I get to new places I like to snap it around the boys’ heads. — Elswick singer/songwriter -—99 ~ “There’s only a few things a girl can do when she’s from Nowhere, U.S. A,Getting married is oncofthcm, but 1 took a harder road. I wouldn’t give anything for it cither.” * Judging from the voice and dispo sition of Miss Molly, the harder road has built strength and character. “I’m sick to death of the wimpy little quality of women we have in rock now.1’ she said. “Nobody looks strong to me. I hope that some point in time we can get some real women up on the screen, instead ofpouty-lippcd little girls who are singing about all those things I’m quite sure they’ve never known.” She said she was worried because oflhccxamplctho.se lightweight sing ers were setting for young girls. “Ill that sense. I’m inspired to be furious, unguarded and wild,” she said. Educator will speak at college dedication High school music ailing in cities, instructor says By Paula Lavigne Senior Reporter In the public schools, band and choir are often the only musical exposure students receive. Their education stops at the memoriza tion of notes and theory. ,4 • Richard Colwell, head of music education at the New England Con servatory of Music, is trying to change that by working closely wi th the new National Standards for Music Education. Colwell, a former bassoonist, will be presenting his ideas for music education reform during the dedication of the College of Fine and Performing Arts this weekend. “We’re trying to make sense out of the role of national standards in arts education and how it will im pact music education “Colwell said. He said emphasis would be taken off memorization and performing and placed on criticism and analy sis. The method of music education at all levels of instruction is poor, he said. “We do a miserable job for the general college student,” Colwell said. He said that because colleges were setting these low standards, hig{i schools and elementary schools followed in their paths. One major problem in music education is that teachers don’t meet national standards, he said. “The teacher makes all the dif ference. It’s not the curriculum. If you go from a good teacher to a bad teacher, the music program can go to smithereens overnight.” There are no arts teachers in the New York City Public Schools sys tem, Colwell said. Finding and funding teachers for arts education in the inner cities is becoming a widespread concern, he said. “There is certainly better access to students in Lincoln, but not in major cities,” he said. A “peace corps” clTort is what is needed to bring teachers into these cities because teachers educated in suburbs usually go back only to teach in suburbs. Colwell will be giving a lecture entitled “Will Voluntary Standards Fix the Potholes of Music Educa tion?” at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Westbrook Music Building. 00s For Sale 'Miyata 712 competion road bike. 15" red/yellow 41993 Bridgestone X05 hybrid. 17"black.
