    Track teams set eight qualifying marks in weekend meet

The Nebraska men’s and women’s
track and field teams had eight NCAA
outdoor provisional qualifying marks
at this weekend’s John Jacobs Invita
tional in Norman, Okla.
The women’s team had five of the
eight qualifying marks.
Paulette Mitchell provisionally
qualified in both the discus and shot
put. Mitchell had a throw of 140 feet,
8 inches to win the discus and a toss of
50 feel, 9 1/2 inches to win the shot

Senior Kwani Stewart also set two
provisional qualifying times. She won
the 110-meter high hurdles in a time
of 13.57 seconds and finished second
in the 200-meter dash with a time of
23.53 seconds.
Sophomore Nicola Martial had the
other provisional mark. She finished
second in the triple jump with a ca
reer-best leap of 42 feet, 11 inches.
Freshman Christina Blackmcrwon
the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9
minutes, 54.08 seconds. Junior Julie
Mazziteili finished second in the event
with a time of 9:56.16.
The Husker women’s 4-by-400
tnetcr relay team also won with a time
of 3:50.29.
Other top finishers for the women
included freshman Kristin Whittcd,
who finished second in the 1,500
mcter run with a time of 5:06.85. In
the 400-mcter hurdles, sophomore
Colleen McKinney finished second
with a time of 1:02.62.
Freshman Angee Henry finished
second in the 400-metcr dash with a
time of 56.07 seconds. Destiny Libel
finished second in the high jump with
a leap of 5 feet, 6 1/2 inches.
The men had three winners, who
all set NCAA provisional qualifying
marks.
Senior Mike Bailey won the 1 IO
meter high hurdles in a time of 14.74
seconds. Senior Pctar Malescv won
the high jump with a leap of 7 feet, 2
inches, and senior Andy Meyer won
the discus with a toss of 182 feet, 3
inches.
Steve Gordon finished second in
the triple jump with a leap of 50 feet,
2 1/2 inches. BalaszTolgycsi finished
second in the 1,500-mctcr run with a
time of 3:50.69.

NU golfers fire best score, finish 1 Oth

The Nebraska men’s golf team
posted its best score of the season,
as it fired a 284 in the final round of
the Vanderbilt Music City Invita
tional.
The Cornhuskers finished 10th
in the 18-tcam tournament with a
two-day score of 591.
The highest Husker finisher was
freshman Trent Morrison, who tied
for 1 8th place with a two-day score
of 146.
Nebraska will be in action next
at the Big Eight Championships in
Hutchinson, Kan., on April 25-26.
Husker softball team loses two at Obu

The Nebraska softball team’s
woes continued as it dropped two
games to third-ranked Oklahoma
State on Sunday in Stillwatcr.Okla.
In the first game, Cornhusker
shortstop Tobin Echo-Hawk hit her
sixth home run of the season, but
Nebraska lost 7-3.
In the second game, the Low
girls crushed the Huskers 13-2 as
they scored six runs in the first
inning.
Echo-Hawk went 3-for-3, had
two RBIs and scored twice in each
game for the Huskers, who dropped
to 14-25 and 0-8 in the Big Eight.
Nebraska plays a doubleheader
at Wichita State today.
NU tennis men
lose in matches
to Colorado, ISU

The Nebraska men’s tennis team
fell to 6-15 overall and 1 -5 in the Big
Eight after losing to Colorado and
Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, over the
weekend.
On Sunday, Iowa State beat the
Huskers 5-2. No. 3 singles playerOmar
Acevedo and No. 4 singles player
Henrik Andersson were the only Husk
ers to win in singles. The doubles
combo of Fredrik Ricsbcck and Brad
Bernthal beat Iowa State’s Mark Jones
and Mark Villanueva.
Nebraska will complete its season
next weekend at the Big Eight Cham
pionships in Oklahoma City.

field goal attempt, the hold was
fumbled.
“We need to improve a lot on our
snapping, our holding and our kick
ing,” Osborne said.
Sims, who will be a sophomore
in the fall, was one bright spot for
the Huskcr offense. The No. 3 I
back, who was injured last spring
and missed the 1993 season, ran for
82 yards on 12 carries and scored
one touchdown Saturday.
“I can’t wait to get back out
there,” Sims said. “It’s been a year
and a half, and I’m ready to go. It
doesn’t matter what I do; I just want
to contribute to the team.”

• Outside linebacker Donta
Jones has been named Lifter of the
Year for the second consecutive
season. The award is given to the
Husker football player who has
shown the greatest dedication in
the Cornhuskers’ strength and con
ditioning program.
Last year, the 6-foot-1 -inch, 215
pound senior shared the honor with
Husker fullback Cory Schlesinger.
Schlcsinger, who will also be a
senior in the fall, was one of five
finalists selected this spring.
Other finalists included defen
sive tackle Christian Peter, tight
end Matt Shaw and offensive guard
Brcnden Slai.
Jones is the first back-to-back
winner of the award since Rik
Bonncsswonin I974and 1975,the
first two years of the award.
