Courage of AIDS victims depicted in ‘Old Friends’ theater preview 3y Sean Me Carthy Staff Reporter_ As 11 people cope with the devas tation of AIDS, their struggle turns^ into an appreciation for the fragility ot life in Mark Gieslcr’s script “Old Friends.” , . Giesler, a third-year doctoral stu dent in theater, said he was volunteer ing for the Nebraska AIDS project when he began writing the script of “Old Friends” last summer. Giesler said he did extensive re search on how AIDS affected people. He said he interviewed a dozen people from Lincoln with AIDS. From those interviews came the characters in Old Friends.” , “A lot of people in the city don t realize that the people who are coping with this disease arc around them,” Giesler said. “They’re their neigh bors.” The characters were not based on any certain person in Gicslcr’s inter views, he said. Instead, the characters were taken as a collective. The performers in “Old Friends” include Linda Adam-Hall, Casey Christo, Mike DeVall, Val Dcvoc, Kathryn Hollerman, Josh Margolis, Paul Pearson and Carl Wilson. Giesler said the actors helped him turn his script into a stage setting. Some of the actors have personally faced the reality of AIDS by knowing of friends and family members who were afflicted with the AIDS virus, he said. With a minimal set, Giesler said the audience must focus on the stories being told. -44 / see this production as a means of communication between those who wake up every day with undaunting courage and those who sometimes take waking up for granted. — Giesler author of “Old Friends” script -99 ~ “Most of us think that terminal diseases arc hopeless,” Giesler said, “but part of that coping was a rc appreciation of life. “Some saw AIDS as a new contract on life. 1 was struck by their courage and optimism of people that chose to live.” The play is part of the Theatrix Sram, which created some ob es for Giesler’s play. The actors were forced to do more of the techni cal production, because the play had a limited budget. Getting the mainstream public to the play also posed some difficulty, Giesler said. However, he said he hoped the issue wouldn’t scare people away. “I see this production as a means of communication between those who wake up every day with undaunting courage and those who sometimes take waking up for granted,” Giesler said.
