Band relates stories of rural life
Once upon a time an adulterer was
struck by lightning during the course
of one of his sinful acts. His lover
raced toward the town tavern, only to
find their parish priest drunk beyond
saving any soul with a last confession.
Ah, the stories one can find in
Clarke County.
The small-town upbringing ol Greg
Cosgrove in Iowa’s Clarke County
has found a place on the map here in
Lincoln.
“Our band, Clarke County, is like
a book with a beginning and an end,"
Cosgrove said. “When I run out of
stories from my hometown, we will be
done.”
Cosgrove fronts Clarke County
with his acoustic guitar, vocals and
rich accounts of rural-life happen
stance.
However, the story of Lincoln’s
Clarke County currently has five hu
man chapters, each consisting of a
unique situation.
Violinist Leanne Dynncson plays
the lead instrumental role with sooth
ing melody lines that maximize the
well-written transitions within Clarke
County’s songs.
Obviously talented, Dynneson also
plays with the Lincoln Symphony
Orchestra. However, when asked about
her symphony parti c ipat ion, Dynncson
sums up the unpretentious character
ofClarkc County with a half-chuckled
answer.
“Yeah.”
Nancy Cosgrove’s fitting accordi
on accompaniment givesC larkcCoun
ty not only a folksy feel but also a rare
bond for two bandmales to share.
Nancy and Greg, the band’s
Cosgroves, arc also married.
“Being in a band together was part
of our marriage contract,” Nancy
joked.
Now for Clarke County’s latest
chapter-worthy developments, the
Zimmerman twins.
Clarke County’s low-end section
doubles your visual and musical re
freshment with the practically identi
cal duoof Barry and BcnZimmcrman.
Barry plays drums while Ben adds
bass guitar.
Since their infusion last winter, the
Zimmermans contriDutions have
broadened Clarke County’s horizon,
and they deserve credit for their “for
thc-song” attitude that illuminates the
spirit of Clarke County.
Plus, two red-haired look-alikes
always make things interesting.
A suitable introduction to Clarke
County must include mention of the
unmistakable vocals of Greg Cosgrove.
The soul-churning effects of his
1’m-rcaching-for-your-gut-now voice
have earned Cosgrove acclaim in the
past. His meaty vocal chords blaze
within Clarke County’s acoustic at
mosphere like fire through a pasture.
Overall, Clarke County’s throat
clearing passion provides its listeners
with a sense of rural and spiritual
realism. Imagine a folk ensemble
wearing steel-toed boots and throw
ing down six-packs of Old Style.
There isn’t a drunk priest out there
who wouldn’t appreciate this band.
Clarke County’s storybook will be
performed in Omaha on Friday night
at Kilgore’s and in Lincoln at Duffy’s
Tavern on Sunday night.

'Lady’ is pick ot the litter
It’s a slow week for new releases:
one terrific comedy, apathetic drama
and another blast-from-lhc-past pick
of the week. As usual, all new releases
are available today.
Cool Runnings(PG) —One ol the
late, great John Candy’s last lilms,
“Cool Runnings” is loosely based on
the real-life story. Candy played the
trainer of the first Jamaican bobsled
team.
The movie is one hilarious hoot
alter another and is a sure-lire hit lor
the kids. This one is worth hunting
down.
Malice (R) — A supposedly
Hitchcockian-typc thriller, "Malice’
falls flat on its face.
Andy Safian (Bill Pullman) is the
dean of a college where women are
being terrorized by a serial rapist. II
that wasn’t enough on his mind, his
wife Tracy (Nicole Kidman) issuflcr
ingfrom mysterious abdominal pains,
and Andy’s old buddy Jed Hill (Alec
Baldwin) hasjust come to town as the
egotistical new surgeon at the town
hospital.
Bad acting, bad direction,bad writ
ing. Go trim your nose hairs instead ot
renting this one.
PICK OF THE WEEK — It’s
snuggle-up time, everybody! Grab a
blanket or comforter, a cup of hot
chocolate and maybe some munchies
to watch “Lady and the Tramp," a
Walt Disney film that made spaghetti
the “pasta of love.”
The love story of how a sheltered
house dog and a spirited street pooch
meet, it’s“Romeo and Juliet” on four
legs. Watch it with friends, family or
a loved one; it will be enjoyed by all.
