the university and the Lincoln com
munity, Blake said.
"It was deeply personal to a whole
lot of people,” she said. "Having a
memorial to Candi would be a life
affirming thing.”
Blake said the university should
remember Harms for her effect on
safety and women’s issues in the com
munity.
Those involved with the project arc
Andrew Loudon and Keith Benes of
the Association of Students of the
University of Nebraska; Blake; James
Griescn, UN L vice chancellor for stu
dent affairs; and the student who
thought of the idea.
Blake said ideas for the memorial
had ranged from a tree with a plaque
to a bench dedicated to Harms mem
ory.
Other ideas include a small statue
and a retaining wall built into the side
of a grassy knoll, similar to the Viet
nam War Memorial in Washington,
D.C., Blake said.
The group is looking into the re
taining wall idea, Blake said. Esti
mates put the price lag at SI0,000 to
SI 5,000.
Blake said the idea must pass the
Aesthetics Review Committee, which
meets April 7 to discuss the issue.
Loudon is planning to appoint an
ASUN steering committee this week
to start fund-raising for the project,
Blake said.

during seven years of service in the
Army.
“It comes down to the bottom line
of whether people trust you or not,” he
said. “The better they know you, the
better off you are in obtaining the
funding support.”
Helmuth said he would use these
skills of originality and human com
munication in Nebraska.
During his first three months in
Lincoln, Hclmulh has spent his time
making contacts and gathering infor
mation about industry in the state and
region and about university faculty.
“My days are typically pretty busy,”
he said.
But the Nebraska concept of"busy”
is what attracted him to the state and
the job of associate vice chancellor of
research.
Meetings at 2 a. m., seven-day work
weeks and 300 proposal-writing
projects a year as a consultant take up
all his energy, he said.
“That gets a little tiring after a
while,” he said.
“I had no life.”
In Nebraska, with his wife Judith,
he has time to do some of his own
research into the outdoors.
“Since I was a little tyke. I’ve en
joyed Mother Nature, and I certainly
can do lots of that where we live,” he
said.
Helmulh said he enjoyed the coy
otes, beaver, pheasants and occasion
al bald eagle that dwelt near his home,
just outside of Lincoln.
And there’s even room here for his
kilt, said Helmuth, who recently
donned the item for a birthday party.
