The Huskers went 4-2 over spring break. At Fullerton, Calif., Nebraska beat St. Mary’s and Cal Statc-Fullcr ton before losing to Montana Slate. This past weekend, Nebraska de feated Oregon and Long Beach State before losing to Fresno State. She also leads the Big Eight with a .443 batting average. Melanie Raimonda earned a victo ry in the first game against Creighton, while Cody Dusenberry’s four-hitter helped the Huskcrs earn a romp in the second game. Genk Parmele/DN Revenge or repeat? I-backs Continued from Page 7 right now.” Solich said the spring was a time for evaluating talent and fighting for spots, but the Huskers might not settle on one back right away. “No matter who starts, more than one guy will play a lot," Solich said. “A lot of areas arc decided this time of year. But ground can be made up when we come back for two-a-days in the fall.” Nebraska will have less time this fall. The Huskers have to be ready to play by Aug. 28, when they open the season against West Virginia in the Kickoff Classic. “Everyone wants to play,” Phillips said. “Everyone wanted to get started early in the KickofTClassic. We want to get back in, because we want to prove that we can play after we lost in the Orange Bowl. Altman to inherit Creighton program OMAHA (AP) — Kansas State coach Dana Altman became the new men’s basketball coach at Creighton University on Thursday. He becomes the 14th head coach in Creighton’s 75-year history. Altman declined to discuss his sal ary, but he said it was a five-year contract that can be renewed after each year he was at Creighton. Altman replaces Rick Johnson, who resigned March 2 after three seasons with the Bluejays. Johnson had a 24-59 record with the Missouri Valley Conference team over that Altman said he wasn’t unhappy at Kansas State and that the toughest decision was leaving the players. “Those 14 players I worked with all year, they’re a great group of guys,” Altman said. “Four of them arc se niors and they wouldn’t be around me much anymore now that they’re done with their eligibility, but those 10 underclassmen, they worked their tails off. They’re a great group of young men.” Creighton’s basketball tradition is solid, but the program will need to be improved, Altman said. Before Thursday’s announcement. Kansas State had ended its season with a 92-79 loss to Siena in the consolation game of the National In vitation Tournament in New York. Altman was 20-14 in his fourth season at Kansas State. Overall, the 35-ycar-old Wilber native was 68-54 at Kansas State and 83-67 as an NCAA Division 1 head coach. In 1993, Altman was named the Big Eight Conference Coach of the Year, when the Wildcats finished 7-7 in the conference and one game out of second place. The Wildcats also were the sixth seed in the NCAA tourna ment.
