‘ Experts ’ get set to debate
By Malcom Miles
Staff Reporter
Women’s Week will be celcbratc<
tonight when the University Prograr
Council stages one of its major event
of the semester: a debate betwee
Phyllis Schlafy and Sara
Weddington.
The two women are on opposit<
sides of practically every issue imag
inable,from the Equal Rights Amend
ment to education.
Schlafly and Weddington have both
^ been honored by numerous magazines
and organizations for their work. Both
also have been called on as experts by
talk shows, newspapers and presi
dents.
Wcddington is a motivational
speaker, concerned with women’s
roles in our constantly changing world.
1 She was one of the first women to
i graduate from the University ofTcxas
s Law School.
n Wcddington served three terms as
fi a member of the Texas House of Rep
resentatives. She also served as Prcs
; ident Carter’s Assistant for Women’s
- Affairs.
Wcddington defended Jane Roe in
the Supreme Court s Koe v. waae
case.
Schlafly, on the other hand, has
been called a “pioneer of American
Conservatism.” She is a graduate ol
Harvard and Washington Universi
ties.
Scniatly played an important roie
in the defeat of the Equal Rights
Amendment. She also served as a
member of the Commission on the
Bicentennial of the United States Con
stitution under President Reagan.
“Schlafly v. Weddington: The Role
of Women in the 90s” will take place
at 8 p.m. in the Nebraska Union’s
Centennial Room. Admission for the
public is $3. The event is free for UNL
students.

are treated like second-class citi
zens.
“They are asked intelligent
questions,” she said.
Nebraska steaks, The Lied Jun
gle, the Old Market and “the beau
ty of Saundcr’s county and how
friendly everyone in Yutan was
created a marvelous experience for
the artists, Lamphcrc said.
She said it made her proud of
her state.
“1 thought, yeah, aren’t we nice?
Yeah, we’re nice.
“They like the thrift stores and
the dollar movie place. They can’t
believe you can walk into
‘Schindler’s List’ and not stand in
line,” Lamphere said.
“They think this is like the cul
tural capital of the world.”
Often thought of as a “boring
cultural wasteland,” Lamphere said
people didn’t give Nebraska
enough credit for its intrigue.
The Wagon Train Project re
ceives much of its support from the
National Performance Council.
The project is also funded by the
Nebraska Arts Council, America
Arts Alliance and other regional
supporters, Lamphere said.
The project’s next event is
“Feather at the Flames” by the
Movin’ Spirits Dance Theater.
