Strickland, who had 13 points and
three rebounds, stepped up to lift^
the Huskers to the victory over the
Cowboys.
“Pike’s our gtMo guy, but when
he’s not having an on night, some
one has to step up to fill the void,”

Johnson had a team-high 19
points and Strickland hit three key
3-pointers, including one with 10:28
left in the game to put the Huskers
up for good 52-48.
But the Cowboys answered ev
ery time Nebraska got out to a lead.
Oklahoma State was within four
points with 2:50 left when Husker
forward Melvin Brooks connected
on a 3-point play to give Nebraska
a 66-59 lead.
Nee said Nebraska’ s bench play,
including Strickland, Brooks and
senior forward Tom Best, won the
game for the Huskers.
“When you go to your bench,
magic things have to happen,” he
said. “Melvin Brooks had a magic
game.
“Our bench was really quality
today. I don’t think Nebraska could
win without our bench.”

NU women fifth in NCAA track

The Nebraska women’s track and field team
had some success this weekend at the NCAA
Indoor Championships in Indianapolis.
The Comhuskcr women tied for fifth place
with Arizona with 26 points. Louisiana State
won the women’s title by scoring 48 points.
The Nebraska men tied for 24tn by scoring 8
points. Arkansas won its 11th indoor champi
onship with an NCAA-record 94 points.
The women were led by triple jumper Nicola
Marital. The sophomore took second place with
a leap of 43 feet, 1 inch. Telisa Young of Texas
won with a jump of 43 feet, 3 3/4 inches.
On Friday, Kwani Stewart finished third in
the 55-mctcr hurdles. Stewart’s time of 7.76
seconds placed her behind Dionne Rose of
Middle Tennessee Stale and Illinois’ Tonya
Williams.
Stewart continued her success in the long
jumpby finishing seventh. She had ajumpof 20
feet, 1 1/2 inches.
Shanelle Porter, who won last year’s 400
meter dash, placed eighth this year with a time
of 53.81 seconds.
Paulette Mitchell finished fifth in the shot
put with a throw of 54 feet, 5 1/4 inches.
Also, Nebraska’s Theresa Stelling was sev
enth in the 3,000-metcr run with a time of
9:32.06.
The women’s 4-by-400-metcr relay team
used a time of 3:42.07 to finish eighth.
On the men’s side, Mark Graham finished
seventh in the 400-mctcr dash. The freshman
had a time of 46.97 seconds.
The men’s 4-by-400-mclcr relay team had a
time of 3:09.05 to finish ninth.
On Friday, the men got points from Willie
Hibler and Pctar Malcscv.
Hibler finished sixth in the 55-mcter hurdles
with a time of 7.36 seconds. Malcscv finished
seventh in the high jump with a leap of 7 feet,
3 inches.

Women’s tennis drops
match to Wichita State

The Nebraska women’s tennis team
dropped to 3-2 on the season after losing
6-2 to Wichita State this weekend in
Wichita, Kan.
No. 1 singles player Annie Yang won
her match for the Huskcrs. Yang defeated
JoEUen Walker 6-0 and 6-2.
No. 6 singles player Alison McNcllis
defeated Kim Doze 6-1,6-0.

“In ihe past couple of years," he said, “we
have been in awe of just getting to the tourna
ment. I think getting over the Big Eight tourna
ment hump is really going to help us."
Nee said this team had a better chance to win
than the 1991 team, which went into the tour
nament w i th a 26-7 record and a No. 3 seed. The
1991 Huskers lost 89-84 to 14th-secded Xavier,
Ohio.
“The difference between the 1991 team and
the ’94 team is the maturity of how to handle it,”
Nee said. “Our team really is focused. I can tell
from the little meeting we just had. They want
to play basketball. They want more than this.”
How much more can the Huskers get?
“1 think we can get to the Sweet 16,” Boone
said.
“Anything can happen,” Johnson said. “It’s
tournament time and anything can happen.
And that’s our goal — to make something
happen. Right now we’re on a roll. We’re just
thinking six games.”
