The Sex Pistols.
11’s too bad CBGB ’s and Atlantic Records
couldn’t have dug up a few live songs record
ed that have historical, cultural or artistic
relevance for 1994’s listeners. With every
song underlapping contemporary useless rock
music, such as Bon Jovi, the prospects of
“Live At CBGB’s” making any professional
or unprofessional critics’ lists are all but
buried.

“Faraway, So Close”
Soundtrack
Sony Music
m
Thousands of U2 fans gasped aloud as
dcmi-god Bono plummeted from the top of a
looming statue of an angel falling to the
streets below at the end of the band’s video
for “Stay (Faraway, So Close!).”
It’s not just a coincidence, then, that W im
Wenders, who has directed many of U2’s
videos, should produce a movie called “Far
away, So Close.” And, of course, U2 would
have to contribute a song or two since it
seems to have become the band’s hobby
nowadays.
It’s not coincidental either that Lqu Reed,
who stars in the movie, also should contrib
ute a song. And, well, if he did, then Nick
Cave, Laurie Anderson, Herbert Grdnemeyer,
Jane Siberry, Simon Bonney and the House
of Love had to as well.
This Wenders’ cocktail party gathering
created a quite “angelic” compilation to
complement the trials and tribulations of
Wenders’ fallen angels.
With a variation of U2’s “Stay (Faraway,
So Close!)” and “The Wanderer,” starring
Johnny Cash, this soundtrack earned its
wings. Cash also mixes with the organic
sounds of a very growly Cave in the title song
“Faraway, So Close,” which is not to be
confused with U2’s song, and the pondering
Reed in “Why Can’t I Be Good.”
Combined with some ethereal orchestral
selections for a celestial mood swing, it gives
the illusion of a mental trip from passionate
rock to classical harmony.
From a cynical spoken-word Cave in
“Cassiel’s Song” to the lullaby voice of
Siberry, a musical tinkcrbell in “Slow Tan
go,” it’s a trade-off between tarnish and
purity.
It’s almost like listening to a battle be
tween good and evil with the wispy angel
songs — dressed with gossamer harmony
and passionate overtones — versus the
catatonic vocalsofCaveand Reed painted by
the blackness of a tarnished soul.
“Faraway, So Close” is a very different
soundtrack. The soundtrack is not trying to
be a smash hit in itself, but, it still is powerful
listening. The combination of instrumental
and popular songs provides a balance of
aesthetic audio beauty with enough inspira
tion for a few fallen angels themselves.

Snaps
Continued from Page 9
You can use these lines to insult not only your
friends, but their family, too. For instance, in
the “Old Snaps” section, there’s, “Your mother
is so old, when Moses split the Red Sea, she was
on the other side fishing.”
Lastly, “Snaps” contains a six-page section
about mastering the art of playing the dozens.
Good advice is given, the most impractical
being_“Wear a bulletproof vest if trying this
in certain sections of the inner city.
I realized trading insults with someone can
be considered a sport. But I have never realized
what an honored, culturally enriching, compli
cated practice talking about other people’s
mothers is, and I’d like to thank the authors for
telling me. I’m thinking about passing the word
to the next busload of schoolkids I meet.
Of course, they may respond with a line like
that from rapper Heavy D, who said in the book,
“You’re so stupid, it takes you an hour to cook
Minute Rice.”
