Student to sing across world

Jennifer Hough has to raise
$12,000, leave her family and
friends for a year and miss a semes
ter of school, but for the chance to
perform with Up With People, she
said, it’s all worth it.
Hough, a senior child develop
ment studies majorat the Universi
ty of Nebraska-Lincoln, tried out
for the international youth-based
musical exchange production in
October 1993.
She never thought she’d make
it.
“It was one of those things where
I’d seen the shows, but when I tried
out I never thought I’d make it,
ever. I just wanted to see what the
interview process was like.”
Hough, 21, competed against
8.000 other people for a spot in a
cast of only 700.
Hough said she had to interview
with three cast members and the
director, but she did not have to
sing and dance because members
were not accepted on their ability to
perform. It was only after she had
been accepted in November 1993
that she sent in a tape of her voice.
Hough, who is from York, pre
viously has performed with the
University Chorale, Yorkshire Play
house productions and the York
High School swing choir. She first
saw Up With People when she was
in high school.
“I’d seen them a couple of times,
and I really do admire what they do,
not just the entertainment process,
but also the community service,”
she said.
Between July 1994 and May
1995, Hough will stay with about
80 host families and travel nearly
30.000 miles across the United
States and in countries like Nor
way, Sweden, Portugal and Spain.
She has never been overseas.
Hough is attempting to raise
$12,000, mainly for transportation

and costume expenses.
Although she said she was excit
ed about the opportunity to travel
the world. Hough said she was scared
about leaving her friends and fam
ily for a year.
“It’s a weird time to go because
when I come back a lot of my friends
will be gone. I’ll miss my parents’
25th wedding anniversary and my

brother’s high school graduation,
things I never thought I’d miss,”
she said.
But Hough hasn’t thought be
yond next year yet.
“I’m so excited about this year.
If it leads to more, it leads to more,”
she said. “But otherwise I’ve had
this year.”

Barney said he understood Bjorklund to
mean he wanted to have forced sexual inter
course with awoman. He said the two did not
further discuss the subject until Bjorklund
invited Barney to his house Sept. 22 and
repeated his desire to rape a woman.
"I had planned to go along with it, but I
didn't really believe it would happen," Barney
said.
Upon seeing Harms near 27th and Vine
streets Barney said Bjorklund ordered him to
follow her to the parking lot of her parents’
residence near 56th Street. Bjorklund got out
of the car and told Barney he would follow in
Harms' car, he said.
Bjorklund, carrying a police scanner and
a gun, approached Harms’ car, entered if
and pushed Harms to the floorboard of the
car. Barney drove to 27th Street and Bluff
Road. Bjorklund followed him in Harms' car.
At 27th and Bluff Road, Barney's car was
getting high centered. Bjorklund put duct
tape around Harms' eyes and hands, put her
in the back of Barney's car and abandoned
Harms' car They then drove to an area near
84th Street and Havelock Avenue.
On the way to the area, Barney said
Bjorklund was pretending to speak on his
police scanner.
"He was saying he was going to bring the
suspect in for questioning," Barney said.
At 84th and Havelock, Bjorklund got out
of the car, placed a blanket on the ground and
told Harms to disrobe Barney said when
Harms verbally resisted the order, Bjorklund
struck her in the head with the muzzle of his
380-caliber handgun.
"She wobbled, she didn't say much, then
she started to disrobe," Barney said.
Barney said Bjorklund had taken the duct
tape off her hands so that she could take off
her clothes Harms was wearing only her
socks and Bjorklund was disrobing when
Barney left in his Nissan to get gas, he said.
Barney said when he returned about 20
minutes later, he heard Bjorklund quoting
lines from the movie "Cape Fear," saying ‘1
am like God, and God is like me " Barney
said Bjorklund also told Harms to say “I am
a woman now." Barney said he thought
Bjorklund had raped her
Barney said Bjorklund then handed him a
condom and said “It's your turn " Barney said
he then had forced sexual intercourse with

Barney said he and Bjorklund put Harms
back in the car, and he followed Bjorklund’s
directions to 134th and Yankee Hill Road.
“She spoke a couple of times. She asked
where she was going to be let go," Barney
said.
Barney said he looked at Bjorklund and
asked him what they would do next. He said
Bjorklund gestured with his finger in a slicing
motion across his neck. Barney said he took
that to mean Bjorklund was going to kill
Harms.
“He said he was going to shoot her be
cause she saw his face," E&arney said. "I said
he didn’t need to shoot her. He should let her
go"
Barney said he and Bjorklund helped
Harms out of the car when Bjorklund grabbed
Harms in a choke hold and began choking
her. He ordered Barney to grab Harms' arms
because she was struggling.
“He was swaying back and forth to choke
her... something snapped . ihey (fell) down
together," Barney said
Bjorklund, kneeling on the ground beside
Harms, shot Harms three times, Barney
said.
The gun jammed, and Barney said
Bjorklund ordered him to get the other gun, a
38-caliber revolver, out of the glove com
partment of Barney's car. Bjorklund shot her
two more times, he said.
Barney said he and Bjorklund had left the
scene when Bjorklund remembered the blan
ket had been left behind. Barney said he
heard Bjorklund fire four more shots when
Bjorklund retrieved the blanket.
Barney said he never fired a gun and tried
to convince Bjorklund not to kill Harms.
In his statement, Barney said:
“Though I realize it is far too much to
ask for forgiveness from the family
and friends of Candice Harms, I do
pray that they may someday find it in
their hearts to forgive me.”
Todd Scars, Harms’ boyfriend, said
he was not convinced that Barney was
sorry for his actions.
“I think if he had any remorse, he
would have stopped (the rape and
murder),” Sears said.

“As much as many of us would like
to have a wet campus, it won’t really
happen.... There is no way we can get
a public institution with public fund
ing to switch to a wet campus," Loudon
said.
Howell said administators and leg
islators had to listen if enough stu
dents voted.
“They’re going to listen.... If you
want a wet campus you have to vote,”
Howell said.
