“Under the Pink”
Tori Amos
Atlantic Records
l. k k k
The cover of “Under the Pink”
shows Tori Amos looking decep
tively angelic.
Amos’ fans need not worry. “Un
der the Pink” delivers all the pas
sionate love and anger found on her
1992 debut, “Little Earthquakes.”
For those unfamiliar with Amos’
piano oriented brand of pop music,
“Under the Pink” will be a pleasant
surprise.
Amos began playing piano when
she was two and composed her first
pieces at age four.
When she was five, she began
training at the Peabody Conserva
tory in Baltimore. At eleven she
was dismissed because she would
not conform to the strict classical
training.
After spending her teen years
playing nightclubs in Washington,
D.C., she moved to England and
later Los Angeles. During this time,
she recorded an unsuccessful al
bum title “Y Kant Tori Read?”
with a pop-metal band.
Then came “Little Earth
quakes.” The release gained her
critical raves and die-hard fans.
The single “Crucify” and her B
s\de, a disturbingly beautiful ver
sion ofNirvana’s“Smells Like Teen
Spirit,” showed Amos at her finest.
That is until now. On “Under the
Pink,” Amos grows musically while
she continues to skillfully manipu
late her playful vocals and aston
ishing lyrics.
Amos’ second release is her
honest exploration of the struggle
between good and evil in each of us
and ways to harness that struggle.
“If there’s a theme on ‘Under
the Pink,’it’sone of self-empower
ment,” Amos said, “whether it’s
women acknowledging the violence
in themselves, or people coming to
terms with the loss of hope.
“It’s about the refusal to see
yourself as a victim, and how to
have passion without equating it
with violence.”
“The Waitress” is a song about
this passion. Amos quietly, pas
sively sings “I want to kill this
waitress /1 can’t believe this vio
lence in mind” before ripping into
the aggressive chorus of “But I
believe in peace Bitch /1 believe in
peace.
The strength of the album is its
diversity. From the carnival waltz
sound of “The Wrong Band” to the
funk rhythms and spastic guitar
work of “God,” the album’s first
single, Amos never falls into a rut.
Part of this success should be
attributed to the diverse talents who
assisted Amos. John Phillip
Shendale’s string arrangements and
prepared piano are beautifully done.
Guest vocalists Merry Clayton and
a subdued Trent Rezner of Nine
Inch Nails provide pleasant con
trast to Amos’ vocals.
The centerpiece of the album is
the epic “Yes Anastasia,” which
clocks in at over nine minutes. This
mysterious piece alone is worth the
price of “Under the Pink.”
Amos’ reputation will continue
to grow with this release, and it
should secure her place in music
history.
