Stone Sundae releases original rock album By Joel Strauch Senior Reporter __ With all the Lincoln bands playing rock ‘n’ roll, it takes some original sound to make a hard and heavy group sound cool and refreshing. That band is Stone Sundae. Stone Sundae, a Lincoln band that has been playing locally for about a year, consists oflead guitarist Ken Peralcz, lead vocalist Pat Hall, bass guitarist Max Brochtrup, percussionist Curt Vanwey and rhythm guitarist Mike Roach. “We’re five guys who are talented in a lot of different aspects of music who finally got their stuff together,” Roach said. “We’re not striving to be real different, but everyone’s real happy with the way we sound,” Brochtrup said. Two band members are graduates from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Brochtrup graduated in 1990 with a criminal justice de gree, and Peralcz graduated in 1991 with a degree in electrical engineering. Most of these guys were in a cover band called Mr. Hyde, but they thought they weren’t getting anywhere. “We used to do the Grove thing,” Peralcz said. “Then we decided that we’d rather play our own stuff and let other people cover that someday. “You can onlyplay ‘Hell’s Bells' by AC/DC so many times,” Brochtrup said. “Doing cover is a waste of time,” Hall said. “If you’ve got something to say, say it yourself.” Stone Sundae has something to say. The band has recently released their debut album “Praise” with 13 original songs. “This album has a lot of feeling in it and really shows the diversity of our musicianship,” Vanwey said. “Everyone contributes to our songwriting,” Peralez said. “We’ll all be throwing out ideas, and Eddie (Hall) will be scribbling away madly, and by the end of the night we’ll have anew song,” he said. The band has been trying to generate local and national interest in this album. “We’ve sent 100 copies of this album to Jeff Halter/ DN Members of Stone Sundae jam at 9th Street Blues on Thursday during Open Jam night, when the stage is open to local bands. Lunacy, a record company in Ohio who is shopping it to the major labels and made 1,000 to distribute locally,” Pcralez said. “We gave aCD to KRNU (campus radio) and now we’re on their rotation,” Pcralez said. “We’re also working with Dream Disk, a record company that sells to markets in Japan, Europe and Australia,” Peralczsaid. “We’ll go wherever the money comes from.” “We’re very hungry to make it,” Roach said. The band’s name, Stone Sundae, came from a brainstorming session. “We filled a hat with all of our ideas and then dumped it out. All the ones that were face down were thrown away and all the ones face up were put back in the hat. Wc kept doing it until only ‘Stone Sundae’ was left,” Pcralez said. “A stone sundae is slang for a knuckle sandwich in bricklayer terms,” he said. Stone Sundae will appear at The Mountains on Feb. 11 and 12 and at J. Ryans on Feb. 18 and 19.
