NU shoots past Cats in victory By Trevor Parks Staff Reporter The Nebraska women’s basketball team picked the right time to make a season-high nine three-pointers in posting its first Big Eight win. The Huskersdefeated Kansas State 78-58 Sunday at the Bob Dcvaney Sports Center. With leading scorer Naieesan Brown on the bench with four fouls, the Cornhuskers took advantage of the three-point line to make a 20-6 run during a four minute stretch in the second half. Bee* uuring mat span, the Huskers — 9-8 overall and 1-3 in the Big Eight — made four three-pointers to increase their lead from 37-34 to 57-40. Sophomore guard Lis Brendan scored nine of her 12 points — including a four-point play — to help Nebraska take control. Coach Angela Beck said it was important for her team to stop being one-dimensional Sunday. “Nafcesah creates so much atten tion inside,” Beck said. “This is the best movement we’ve had all year. I put pressure on our guards to shoot more. It makes us a more complete team.” The Huskers made 7-of-12 sec ond-half three-point attempts and made 9-of-19 overall. The 19 attempts tied a school record set at Long Beach State in 1988. KateGalligan’s fourth three-point er of the game gave Nebraska its biggest lead at 75-50 with 2:49 re maining. Galligan, who scored a career-high 20 points, said that playing without Brown was a good lesson for the Huskers. “This forced us to move the ball more,” Galligan said. “We need to open up the perimeter to help our inside players.” The Huskers needed that Friday, too, as they dropped a 78-57 game to Kansas. The Jayhawks had four play ers score in double figures. Nebraska led midway through the first half, but the Jayhawks went on a 17-4 run that helped put them ahead 41-25 at halftime. Kansas, which improved to 12-1, outscored Nebraska 37-32 in the sec ond half, despite 18 second->ialf points from Brown. Brown, who scored 22, had 16 of the Huskers’ first 20 points in the half. But Beck said the Big Eight-lead ing Jayhawks “pretty much controlled everything.” “I felt like there wasn’t a spark on my team to compete with a team like this,” she said. “I don’t know where I’m going to find that spark.” Galligan said the Huskers needed some shots to fall Friday, like they did Sunday. “We took the same shots as we did Friday but (Sunday) they went in,” Galligan said. NU women gymnasts get win From Stan Heporfs Nebraska’s women gymnasts opened the season with a win over Illinois at Champaign, 111. The Cornhuskers outscored the Illini 185.2 to 181.75. Despite the victory, first-year coach Dan Kendig said the Huskers needed to improve. “I would have felt better if we would have hit more sets,” Coach Dan Kendig said. “It was the first meet, and you will see a big change in our routines next week. Nebraska freshman Kim DeHaan finished second in the all around, posting a score of 36.925. Illinois’ Nicole Viernes finished first with a score of 37.125. Husker freshman Shelly Bartlett won the uneven bars with a score of 9.65. “We’re young and we’re only going to get better,” Kendig said. Nebraska faces Southeast Mis souri State Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
