NU President-elect Dennis
Smith continued his four-day Lin
coln visit Tuesday, meeting with
members of the Nebraska Legisla
ture and various NU administra
tors.
The main goals of this week’s
visit — Smith’s third to Nebraska
— are to get familiar with the Of
fice of the President and meet with
senior University of Nebraska ad
ministrators and staff members.
Smith spent about 20 minutes in
the legislative chamber Tuesday
morning, visiting informally with
Sens. Chris Beutler of Lincoln, Bob
Wickersham of Harrison, Janis
McKenzie ofHarvard, Don Preister
of Omaha and C.N. “Bud” Robinson
of Blair.
Smith was chosen as the fifth
NU president in November and
will take over for outgoing presi
dent Martin Massengale on March
1. Smith has served as executive
vice chancellor of the University of
Califomia-Irvine since 1987.
He had an informal meeting
Monday with Massengale. The talk
was low-key, Smith said.
“Some of it had to do ... with
living in the president’s house.” he
said.
Smith said he was excited about
being president.
“I’m looking forward to inter
acting with lots of different people
and moving the university forward,”
he said. “We re all on the same
team.”
When he arrives in March, Sm ith
said, he will spend a lot of time with
the chancellors of the four NU cam
puses, listening to their problems
and concerns.
Smith also plans to prepare next
year’s budget and visit with each
member of the NU Board of Re
gents.
“My goal is to make the Univer
sity ofNebraska the best university
it can be,” he said.
Smith also met with Computing
Services Network staff members
Tuesday.
He is scheduled to meet today
with the news media. Gov. Ben
Nelson, the Ag Builders organiza
tion and representatives of the cam
pus commissions on gender equity.
