Free throws sink NU From Staff Reports The Nebraska women’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker Sunday at Oklahoma when Angie Guffy sank two free throws with two-tenths of a second remaining to give the Sooners a 79-78 victory. With Oklahoma leading 75-69, Nafeesah Brown’s six straight free throws and Kate Galligan’s three-pointer gave the Huskers a 78 77 lead with 1:04 remaining. After Nebraska turned the ball over, Guffy missed a shot with 10 seconds remaining. Nebraska’s Pyra Aarden was fouled on the rebound and missed the front end of a one-and one foul shot. After getting the ball down the court, Guffy was fouled by Aarden to set up the winning free throws with less than a second remaining. Coach Angela Beck saw her team drop to 8 7 and 0-2 in the Big Eight with the loss she said shouldn’t have been. “I thought Pyra had a great game and we wouldn’t have been in it at the end without her,” Beck said. “This was our game to win. We dominated the second half.” Oklahoma used a 29-11 run in the first half to hold a 42-31 advantage at intermission. The Sooners’ Etta Maytubby scored 15 of her game high 25 points in the first half. Nebraska cut into the Oklahoma lead to start the second half, as Aarden scored six points in the first 3^:30 to bring Nebraska within six at 46 After another Oklahoma run, Mcggan Yedsena and Galligan hit three-pointers to help Nebraska go on a 17-4 run and tie the game at 59. Brown led the Huskers with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Galligan added 18. Respect Continued from Page 7 ing for his three sacks and countless quarter back hurries. Likewise, Dixon wasentitled to more—130 yards and a touchdown more, to be exact—for his playmaking on the punt return and two catches that were nullified. Byron Bennett, who once dreamed of kick ing a national-title winning field goal, deserved better than to have to do it twice in the final seconds of the game. And Mike Anderson, Toby Wright, John Reece, Kevin Ramaekers and the rest of the defense’s senior stoppers should have some thing more to show for their efforts. Still, Ramaekers found some consolation. “I am laughing right now at all the people that said we couldn’t do it,” he said. “You know, in some aspects of the game, I felt 1 ike we really kicked the hell out of them. “We didn’t come out winners, but deep down inside I feel like we won this game.” Sodocs Coach Tom Osborne. And he should feel that way. He outpreparcd and outcoached Bobby Bowden, only to be left without a na tional title again. But just like Gill was, Frazier could be Jones Continued from Page 1 :an prepare myself a little better.” At the time, Jones said his injuries and a possible shot to play for a national champion ship again next season probably would bring him back to Nebraska for his senior season. Osborne s ticket to national-title showdowns in the next two years. The sophomore quarterback stole the show from Heisman Trophy-winner Charlie Ward, then watched Ward steal the ring from him in Florida State’s final drive. That makes Frazier all the more hungry for next season. “I am very excited,” he said. “We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.... I don’t want to say anything else.,.. We’ll just have to wait and see.” Wait and see. Sounds 1 ike four other Nebras ka words. Wait. Till. Next. Year. But somehow, with the Huskers’ performance in the Orange Bowl, those words have a new, national title ring to them. Alter 1U years in the shadows, Nebraska’s back in the spotlight. The Huskers will start off next season where they left off this year— in the top 3. They may get a nationally televised season opener in the Pigskin or Kickoff classics. They’ll certainly get any recruit they want. And they might even get some respect. Cooper is a senior news-editorial major and the Daily Nebraskan sports editor. “Right now 1 realize, definitely after this game, that because of the injuries and the competition out there that getting my degree would definitely be more important than play ing professional football,” Jones said. “And it is definitely an opportunity where this Nebraska team has a lot of great players coming back, and I would definitely like to be a part of this foundation.” Does Your Heart Good. 4 American Heart Association Made Any New Year's Resolutions?
